Elephant Attacks in India Victimize Farmers, NPP Demands Urgent Government Assistance

Farmers in the South West Khasi Hills region of India's Meghalaya state are facing a major crisis due to the recent increase in human-elephant conflicts. The NPP Ranikor Block Unit demanded urgent intervention from the state government to support producers who have suffered heavy financial losses due to the destruction of crops by wild elephants. Unit president Nelbi T Sangma, in a statement on the matter, noted that many farmers cannot sell their produce and that this situation creates profound financial pressure on families who depend on agriculture. The sudden destruction of a year's worth of farmers' labor seriously threatens rural life and the local economy. Authorities are called upon to immediately conduct field inspections to understand the scale of this disaster and deliver the deserved compensation to the victims.

Nelbi T Sangma emphasized the need for urgent field investigations to determine the extent of the damage in various villages under the Ranikor Rural Development Block. He stated that periodic attacks by elephant herds completely devastate orchards and agricultural lands, destroying people's livelihoods. He highlighted that farmers cannot go to the market because they have no crops left to harvest this year, and therefore cannot earn any income. He added that this situation is not limited to just this season but also disrupts the families' future financial plans. Sangma stated that without providing urgent financial support to these farmers and taking long-term measures, the standard of living in the region will continue to decline.

Despite repeated complaints from villagers to the Forest Department, the fact that no official inspection has yet been carried out to assess the damage is drawing significant backlash. Sangma pointed out bureaucratic negligence, stating that authorities were informed about the issue but no one has come to the area to confirm the damage. Saying that the absence of officials causes victims to not receive their deserved compensation, Sangma emphasized that on-site assessment is essential to solve the problem. Villagers express feeling a great sense of injustice because government officials have not gone to the field to see the facts. NPP officials demand that processes be operated transparently, swiftly, and fairly so that victimized farmers can fully benefit from state support.

This issue of victimization was previously brought up during a 'CM Connect' program attended by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, from whom support was requested. The Chief Minister accepted this directive and instructed the relevant departments to investigate the matter and develop long-term mitigation measures. However, it is noted that despite the time passed, the situation of the local people remains critical and no concrete step has been taken. The NPP Ranikor Block Unit criticized the authorities for not taking action despite the Chief Minister's instructions, demanding a rapid action plan. Farmers in the region expect officials to go beyond empty promises and produce realistic and permanent solutions to prevent elephant attacks.

Elephant attacks and human-elephant conflicts have reached alarming proportions, especially in villages such as Phutkroh, Mawpud, Rajai, Panchering, Puksora, and Largao. Wild elephants devastate agricultural lands by specifically targeting crops like jackfruit, pineapple, betel nut, and betel leaf, which are the farmers' primary sources of income. According to villagers, elephants are now coming much more frequently to settlements where they were rarely seen before, keeping the local population in a constant state of panic. Especially in areas like Nongnah, Balat, and Ranikor, elephant activities that were once rare have now practically turned into a daily threat. Approaching human settlements due to the shrinking of their natural habitats, elephants have become a serious ecological and economic problem in the region.
