Attention Drawn to Ecological Threats Against Sacred Groves in India

Located in the Andhra Pradesh state and known as 'Pavithravanams', sacred groves have long been protected as a refuge for both faith and traditions. A study conducted in a single area in the Anantapur district proved the high ecological value of these areas by documenting 378 different plant species. However, researchers state that these rare ecosystems are increasingly under threat due to urban and cultural pressures.

The botanical research conducted between 2018 and 2026 in the Penna Ahobilam Sacred Forest identified 49 trees, 56 shrubs, 235 herbs, and 38 climber species. It was noted that this rich vegetation consists of tropical dry deciduous forest remnants harboring medicinal and local species such as neem, fig, and Indian date palm. It is emphasized that the 730 sacred groves identified as a result of the examinations are critical biodiversity spots for the conservation of local flora and fauna.

On the other hand, the expansion of temples, the removal of local vegetation, and various development activities jeopardize the long-term survival chances of these areas. Scientists point out that sacred groves are now too vulnerable to be left solely to local beliefs and traditions. The report suggests that community-based conservation practices and scientific management should be used together for the protection of these ecosystems.
