How Does Cancer Survive Without Oxygen?

In this way, cancer cells adapt to oxygen-free conditions and the tumor continues to grow.

The ability of cancer cells to survive without oxygen also leads to treatment resistance. Radiotherapy and some chemotherapy drugs are more effective in the presence of oxygen. Hypoxic tumor regions show resistance to these treatments and can cause the disease to relapse. For this reason, new treatment strategies targeting hypoxia are being developed. For example, HIF-1 inhibitors or drugs that selectively kill hypoxic cells are being studied.

In conclusion, understanding the survival mechanisms of cancer cells in oxygen-free environments is of critical importance for developing more effective treatments. While this information reveals the complexity of tumor biology, it also offers new hopes in the fight against cancer. Research shows that combining hypoxia-targeting approaches with existing treatments can increase treatment success.
