84 thousand smuggled cigarettes of Belgian origin seized at AIFA in Mexico

Mexico's National Customs Agency (ANAM), in coordination with the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), foiled a major smuggling attempt at Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). As part of the operation, customs authorities seized approximately 84 thousand cigarettes brought from Belgium to Mexico on suspicion of being imported through inauthentic or illegal channels. This operation is significant as it highlights AIFA's continued importance as an international trade hub while demonstrating the effectiveness of inspection mechanisms against cross-border smuggling activities.

According to official statements, the detection of the cigarette shipment was made possible through the agency's continuous customs intelligence, risk analysis studies, and the strengthening of control mechanisms applied to foreign trade operations. Mexican authorities are focused on continuously developing the capacity of customs units to prevent illegal trade, particularly in the country where trade has increased under the T-MEC (Trade Agreement between the United States, Mexico, and Canada). Such operations not only prevent tax losses but also contribute to ensuring trade operates within a legal framework by blocking the entry of illicit products that could endanger public health.

Customs officials stated that detailed inspections carried out by expert personnel during the examination of documents and operational processes were utilized when detecting the relevant cargo. In the announcement, it was emphasized that inconsistencies in documents or cargo were identified with the support of strategic analysis tools, risk profiling, and customs monitoring mechanisms. Accordingly, a special investigation has been launched regarding the party transporting the cargo or the cargo company, and a legal file has been prepared to initiate legal proceedings to address the dispute. This situation proves that Mexican customs possess an in-depth analytical capability beyond simple inspection.

In an assessment by ANAM, it was emphasized that such inspections strengthen institutional audit capacity and increase supply chain transparency by ensuring document tracking. It was also noted that these strict inspections serve as a deterrent against fraudulent illegal activities in foreign trade and play a vital role in protecting legal trade. The institution reaffirmed that maintaining such meticulousness at customs gates is central to its policies for preventing unfair competition and protecting state revenues.

Finally, the relevant authorities announced that they will continue to resolutely carry out inspection, control, and intelligence activities in cooperation with Sedena to ensure legality, security, and order in the country. It was conveyed that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent the entry of any products that may violate current laws, and that such controls will continue strictly in the coming period.
