Mexico City Issues Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain and Hail Across 13 Boroughs

A Yellow Alert was issued by the Secretariat for Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection (SGIRPC) due to the risk of heavy rain and hail in Mexico's capital, Mexico City (CDMX). Expected to be effective on the afternoon and evening of Saturday, July 11, 2026, the warning covers the hours between 16:05 and 22:00 local time. Authorities urged citizens to be cautious against severe rainfall, as well as possible electrical activity and hail. Under the yellow alert, 13 different boroughs of the capital were designated as risk zones. It is evaluated that possible adverse situations such as flooding, water pooling, and flash floods may occur in these areas. Authorities advise citizens to stay away from open areas during these hours and to take necessary precautions.

The 13 boroughs announced to be at risk include Álvaro Obregón, Azcapotzalco, Benito Juárez, Coyoacán, Cuauhtémoc, and Cuajimalpa. In addition, major areas such as Gustavo A. Madero, Iztacalco, Iztapalapa, and Magdalena Contreras were included in the scope of the warning. The boroughs of Tláhuac, Tlalpan, and Venustiano Carranza are also among the locations that could be affected by adverse weather conditions. Authorities emphasized that residents living in these areas must closely monitor meteorological developments. It is noted that water pooling, especially in low-lying areas and regions near drainage channels, can quickly reach dangerous levels. Civil protection teams are kept on standby to respond to possible emergencies.

Meteorological radar data from the Civil Protection unit reveals the dynamics of precipitation in the region in detail. In the initial radar readings taken at 15:05, severe rainfall movements with the potential for hail were detected over eastern Iztapalapa. During the same hours, rainfall varying between light and moderate intensity was recorded in the north of Gustavo A. Madero. Later, a second update issued at 16:25 indicated that the situation was shifting towards the south. According to this update, moderate rainfall affected the Álvaro Obregón, Cuajimalpa, Magdalena Contreras, and Tláhuac regions. In the Benito Juárez, Cuauhtémoc, Milpa Alta, Miguel Hidalgo, and Xochimilco boroughs, rainfall continued at light levels, but new rain cells were reported to be approaching the area.

Assessments from the National Meteorological Service (SMN) paint a more comprehensive picture across Mexico City. According to SMN's forecasts, the capital will be under the influence of localized and heavy downpours ranging from 25 to 50 millimeters over the next 24 hours. This meteorological situation is further triggered by cyclonic circulations in the middle and upper layers of the atmosphere, low-pressure channels, and the movement of tropical waves number 17 and 18. While temperatures in the region are expected to range between a high of 24-26°C and a low of 13-15°C, it was announced that wind speeds in stormy areas could reach up to 40 kilometers per hour. It was noted that the State of Mexico will also be affected by similar weather conditions and that local residents need to be cautious.

This latest warning comes after an extremely rainy week in the capital. According to data from the Secretariat of Water Management (SEGIAGUA), 54.95 millimeters of rain was measured in Mexico City in the first nine days of July. Since the beginning of 2026, the total rainfall reached 507.07 millimeters, a figure well above the historical average of 375.46 millimeters for the same period. Particularly, the heaviest rainfall of the week occurred on Wednesday, July 8; on that day, at least 75 water pools were reported in the city, while over 100 personnel and 41 specialized teams were deployed to the field. This heavy rainfall equates to a total of 29.1 million cubic meters of water in the city, causing severe flooding in metro stations, homes, and main arteries.
