July Hike Figures for Millions of Retirees and Civil Servants Becoming Clear

A critical economic period affecting millions of employees and retirees across Turkey is beginning. The salary increases for July, concerning approximately 25 million citizens, will become clear with the June inflation data to be announced today. This data, to be announced by Turkey Statistical Institute (TÜİK) at 10.00, will determine the final rate of the hike for civil servants, civil servant retirees, as well as SSK and Bağ-Kur retirees. The new figures, calculated based on the six-month inflation difference and collective bargaining provisions, will be reflected in the salaries down to the last penny.

According to calculations, the inflation rate accumulated in the first five months of the year constitutes a critical base for salary increases. According to official data, inflation was realized as 16,61% in the January-May period. This situation guarantees that SSK and Bağ-Kur retirees will receive at least a 16,61% hike, regardless of the June inflation rate. For civil servants and civil servant retirees, the base rate corresponds to a 12,41% increase including the collective bargaining raise. The said increases will be reflected not only to retirees but also to approximately 2 million people receiving disability pensions, old-age pensions, and home care salaries.

Market experts and economists expect the June inflation data to be announced today to show an increase of around 1%. If these predictions materialize, the total hike rate for SSK and Bağ-Kur retirees could rise to around 18%. For civil servants and civil servant retirees, calculations including the inflation difference indicate that the total increase will settle in the range of 13,5% to 14%. These expectations shape the salary increases in the light of economic data.

The monetary dimension of the increases to be reflected in the salaries is also of great importance. It is predicted that the lowest civil servant salary will rise from the current 64,000 lira level to over 72,000 lira. An average increase of between 10,000 and 11,000 lira is expected in the salaries of public employees such as expert teachers and police officers. These figures clarify the economic picture that will directly affect the purchasing power of citizens. The new salaries will become official after the announcement of the inflation data.

All eyes are turned to the official announcement from TÜİK at 10.00. With the announcement of the data, the hike rates awaited by millions will be finalized. Meanwhile, in corridors and public opinion, discussions are being conducted regarding whether an additional 'welfare share' will be added to make an extra improvement to salaries besides these hikes. A possible extra regulation could be added on top of the existing increases, pushing final salaries even higher.
