Worker Protest at FUTA Teaching and Research Hospital in Nigeria Dispersed by Police Intervention

While authorities argued that the intervention was necessary to maintain public order, worker representatives claimed that disproportionate force was used.

Union members who participated in the protest gathered to demand the rectification of long-standing wage injustices and working conditions. Employees assert that the hospital management failed to keep previous promises and that various employee rights have been usurped. Healthcare workers, who worked with great dedication during the pandemic, stated that they face financial difficulties amid rising inflation. Furthermore, serious concerns are being expressed regarding issues such as personnel safety and career advancement. Union officials warned that broader actions, such as a strike, could be undertaken if their demands are not met.

Following the escalation of the events, the situation around the hospital remained highly tense, and security forces extensively cordoned off the area. The police justified their actions by stating that the demonstrators' blocking of the hospital's main entrance prevented emergency cases from being treated, posing a significant risk to public health. Eyewitnesses reported that the police attempted to disperse the crowd using tear gas and pepper spray. It was reported that shoving occurred between some demonstrators and police officers during this intervention, and a few individuals suffered minor injuries. The hospital management announced that urgent measures have been taken to resolve the disruptions and that they are working in coordination with security units.

The group most affected by the protest was undoubtedly the patients and their relatives. The cessation of services at this large teaching hospital, where thousands of patients register and receive treatment, created a critical situation, especially for those with chronic conditions. While surgeries and outpatient appointments were postponed to a later date, there was a massive surge in the number of admissions to the emergency department. Some patients had to seek care at private hospitals due to the uncertainty of when the situation would return to normal. This situation once again exposed the existing inequalities in the healthcare system and the victimization vulnerable groups face during times of crisis. Some groups, including hospital staff, added that minimal services are being maintained to ensure patients are not adversely affected.

Rising living costs and economic difficulties in Nijerya recently have led to an increase in the frequency of worker actions and strikes across the country. This incident at FUTATH paints a picture that questions the attitude of the government and institutions towards the economic demands of their employees. The Nijerya Tıp Derneği (NMA) and other health unions issued a statement condemning the police intervention against peaceful protesters and called on the government for dialogue. Human rights organizations also stated that such interventions against freedom of expression and the right to assemble are concerning. Meetings planned between the union and hospital management in the coming days are of great importance regarding whether the issue will be resolved.
