The Peruvian government is requesting legislative powers from Congress to accelerate preparations for the El Niño phenomenon. Labor and Employment Minister Juan Sheput visited the town of Atico in the Caravelí province of Arequipa to inspect preventive works in the Quebrada Honda area, which is at risk of landslides. The Minister emphasized that the delegation of powers would allow for faster regulations in an emergency and ensure inter-sectoral coordination.

Lima Expresa has brought forward maintenance and prevention works on the 1.8-kilometer stretch of the Rímac River between the Huánuco and Santa Rosa bridges from the planned October-November period to August. Operations Manager Guina Ayora stated that approximately 12 thousand tons of sediment and debris will be cleared within this framework. The works are being carried out in coordination with the Municipality of Metropolitan Lima and the National Water Authority (ANA).

Company officials stated that the works will last 75 days and, unlike previous years, are targeted for completion around October 20. This date was set with the aim of finishing before the period when rainfall and river flow are forecast to increase. The measures aim to protect urban infrastructure against the heavy rains and floods that El Niño could bring.
