In the city of Rosario, Argentina, local artists have come together to transform the outer wall of El Salvador Cemetery into a giant open-air art gallery. Overlooking Pellegrini Bulvarı and with a historical background of approximately 170 years, this area is being brought back to life through an artistic intervention named "Proyecto Cielo". Standing out as the city's first collective mural work, this project is also featured as one of the municipality's cultural events within the scope of the cemetery's foundation anniversary celebrations. Using a color palette inspired by the sky and nature, the artists aim to aesthetically revitalize the public space. Thus, the necropolis, a significant historical symbol of the city, becomes integrated into the city's cultural tours and daily art routes.

Brought to life with the participation of eight talented local artists, the project features the signatures of Anne Gabillot, Guille Pasquet, Julio Menna, Leo Serial, Leonardo García, Lucía MF, Máximo Notarángelo, and Vualá. When completed, the artwork will consist of 24 separate sections or panels, each measuring approximately 5 x 5.60 meters. These massive canvases will transform an ordinary wall into an impressive exhibition space offering a visual feast to spectators. The collective effort and creativity of the artists aim to add an artistic touch to the daily lives of the city's residents. Thus, the silent cemetery walls of the past are turning into a vibrant art meeting point beating in the heart of the city.

Before the artists began painting the walls, a comprehensive preparation process was carried out to strengthen the physical infrastructure of the area. Extensive cleaning, repair, rearrangement, and priming procedures were meticulously applied to the walls by municipal teams. Additionally, the lighting of the facade and surrounding areas was modernized, increasing both security and ensuring the artwork could be seen at night. The overall appearance of the area was significantly improved by pruning surrounding trees and landscaping. Not only the exterior facade but also comprehensive restoration and maintenance works were carried out inside the cemetery, aiming to add value to the entire area.

El Salvador Cemetery is an important historical structure located in the macro-center of Rosario, right next to Parque de la Independencia, built as a result of the city's demographic expansion. Opened for service on 7 Temmuz 1856 following the collapse of the old central cemetery, this necropolis bears the traces of 19th-century European architectural and urban planning traditions. Covering a massive area of five hectares, the cemetery keeps the city's memory alive with its well-maintained large gardens and over 50 thousand graves. Magnificent monuments and family mausoleums made of stone, marble, and cast iron almost turn this place into a magnificent museum of the past. Being the final resting place of the city's prominent and historic families, this area represents much more than just a burial ground.

With its unique funerary art works, distinctive architectural structures, and the graves of famous figures who have left their mark on the city, El Salvador stands as one of the centers of Rosario's tangible and intangible heritage. Angel sculptures, sorrowful figures, and authentic architectural details of the period are among the most important elements that make this place an open-air museum. These deep cultural traces left by artists and architects from the past to the present continue to be a source of inspiration for new generations. The "Proyecto Cielo" project also pays tribute to this unique heritage by reconnecting the historical cemetery to the dynamic cultural life of the city. The modern artworks emerging on the walls build a bridge between the 19th-century aesthetics and contemporary creativity, endowing this land with entirely new vitality and value.
