Drowning Cases Increase in the Komi Republic of Russia: Alcohol and Illegal Beaches are the Main Causes

In the Komi Republic of Russia, the number of accidents occurring in water bodies has shown a concerning increase recently. According to a statement made by the Regional Ministry of Emergency Situations (MÇS), exactly 22 accidents have been recorded in water bodies since the beginning of 2026. As a result of these tragic events, a total of 19 people lost their lives. Authorities conducted a detailed analysis to examine the main reasons behind these deaths. These investigations revealed that the loss of lives mostly stemmed from preventable negligence.
According to the report prepared by rescue teams, failure to observe basic safety rules in water bodies ranks first among the main causes of fatal accidents. People entering the water in unequipped and unauthorized areas that are in no way suitable for swimming also poses a great danger. In addition, it is emphasized that spending time and entering the water on river or lake shores while under the influence of alcohol leads to fatal consequences. Authorities specifically note that individuals' ability to assess their surroundings and their own limits is impaired by alcohol. Therefore, alcohol consumption is considered one of the main triggering factors in water accidents.
Another critical dimension of the issue is that no beach has been officially opened in the region so far. It was reported that authorities plan to put 8 swimming areas and 68 communal recreation facilities by the water into operation throughout the Komi Republic this year. However, so far, only 4 applications could be made to the authorized institutions to open beaches. The main reason for the delay in the beach opening process was announced as the water levels in the rivers exceeding safety standards. This situation causes citizens to head towards unauthorized and unmonitored 'wild' water bodies, consequently increasing the risks.
Upon the increase in loss of lives, officials from the Ministry of Emergency Situations issued severe warnings to the residents and visitors of the region. It is emphasized that people should only enter the water in specially equipped areas where safety measures are taken and which are officially permitted for swimming. It is stated that unmonitored beaches contain many invisible dangers such as underwater cavities, hidden tree trunks, sudden cold water currents, and strong streams. It is reminded that diving headfirst is absolutely inappropriate in waters with unknown depth, as there may be stones, metal debris, and trash at the bottom that could cause injuries. People are also urged to accurately assess their physical endurance and not to go too far from the shore.
Safety experts also state that one should absolutely not enter the sea or river during periods when weather conditions are inadequate and the water and air are cold. It is noted that sudden temperature changes can cause vascular constriction and consequently lead to a heart attack. A warning is issued that swimming very close to watercraft, boats, and jet skis poses a great danger due to the risk of being caught in propellers. Finally, authorities specifically emphasize that children by the water should never be left alone, because drowning cases usually occur silently and within seconds. It is mandatory for children to be under the close supervision of parents, even in shallow waters.
