Sheinbaum Protests US Deportation of Over 2,900 Mexicans to Central America

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum strongly reacted to the US administration's deportation of more than 2,900 Mexican citizens directly to Central American countries instead of Mexico. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded Washington stop these "third country" deportations and return Mexicans directly to their homeland. This development has brought the tension in migration policies between the two neighboring countries back to the agenda.

Recently, while the US has increased the number of deportations citing border security, it has been directing some detainees to third countries willing to accept them (particularly Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador) instead of their countries of origin. Mexico finds this practice contrary to international law and bilateral agreements. The Sheinbaum government has activated diplomatic channels for the safe and respectful return of its citizens.

This new crisis between the two countries deepens concerns about the US expanding its deportation policy under "Safe Third Country" agreements. Mexico argues that the rights of deported citizens have been violated and there has been a lack of transparency in the process. It is predicted that this issue will be a central agenda item in bilateral relations in future talks.
