In a tragic accident at the Caupolicán market in the Viña del Mar city of Chile, a vehicle plowed into a crowd, resulting in the loss of six lives. Seven people, including two babies, were also injured in the accident and taken to a local hospital. It was reported that three of the deceased were women and three were men.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as an off-duty personnel belonging to the Chilean Navy, who lost control while driving his private vehicle on 24 Norte Boulevard. Chilean police forces (Carabineros) took the driver into custody and launched an investigation into the accident.

In a statement made via social media, President of Chile José Antonio Kast expressed that the country is in mourning, offering condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. Emphasizing that all state institutions are working to respond to the incident and identify those responsible, Kast declared a period of national mourning.
