Sonam Wangchuk ends his 26-day hunger strike following the government's written commitments

Indian activist Sonam Wangchuk explained his reasons for ending his 26-day hunger strike, despite the government not providing assurances regarding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Wangchuk stated that he received written commitments from the Central Government on key demands such as immunity for peaceful protesters, compensation for the families of students who lost their lives, and a Parliamentary debate on exam reforms.

The activist stated that he extended his hunger strike for two more days because he wanted the government's promises to be in writing rather than verbal assurances. Following two days of negotiations, after meeting with Federal Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, around 65 members of parliament from different political parties also called on Wangchuk to end his hunger strike.

The written assurances provided by the government cover three main issues. Accordingly, no legal action will be taken against the students who participated in the peaceful protests at Jantar Mantar and the march on 20 July. Furthermore, appropriate compensation will be paid to the families of more than 20 students who lost their lives in connection with the exam paper leak controversy, and a comprehensive discussion on accountability will be held in Parliament to prevent similar incidents in the future.
