Yapay Zekâ Tavsiye Edebilir, Ancak Kararı İnsanlar Vermelidir

Starting with the dream of an unconscious patient lying in the intensive care unit who has not shown any improvement for days, the article deeply questions the limits of artificial intelligence in medical decision-making processes. An artificial intelligence system that analyzes thousands of similar cases states that the patient's chance of recovery is extremely low and recommends withdrawing life support. When the medical team examines this analysis, they see that the data is comprehensive and statistically extremely robust. The rationale presented by the system is logical, and the conclusions drawn perfectly align with the data. However, for the doctors standing at the bedside, the decision still feels incomplete; because the remaining issue is not accuracy, but the responsibility of bearing the consequences.

Artificial intelligence is highly capable of processing massive amounts of data and uncovering hidden patterns that would be very difficult for humans to see alone. From medicine to the finance sector, and even public policy, these systems can present the most optimal action plans based on the data they obtain, and these capabilities provide significant benefits today. However, the author emphasizes that decisions cannot be defined solely by whether they are statistically correct. Every decision goes beyond the immediate outcome, directly affecting human lives, relationships, and the moral integrity of those implementing the decisions. Therefore, in the example of the patient in intensive care, the main issue is not whether the system's recommendation is correct, but who is ready to accept the consequences of this decision.

Artificial intelligence can make recommendations, perform detailed analyses, and predict the future with astonishing precision. However, the most fundamental deficiency of these systems is their inability to shoulder the weight or responsibility of the decisions they prescribe. An artificial intelligence model cannot stand by the patient's family to support them, cannot hesitate at the moment of decision, and cannot live with the consequences that will arise from the decision made. In the past, a doctor, a judge, or a manager would stand behind their own decisions and be accountable for the results. Today, however, this sense of responsibility is becoming increasingly blurred as algorithms gain more power, and humans tend to accept the systems' recommendations as impartial instructions.

Because algorithms are fed by large data sets and complex models are used, they can appear extremely authoritative and objective. However, it should not be forgotten that every system reflects the subjective choices made by humans, from the data it is trained on to its goals. When people increasingly trust the decisions of systems that do not share their consequences, they face the risk of becoming detached from the weight of their own actions. This situation indicates a subtle change that is initially difficult to notice in professional life. Over time, people may start to remove decision-making from being a personal responsibility and begin to carry out the system's recommendations as mere acts of execution.

Yet, in medicine, a patient is not merely a sum of clinical variables; in law, a case cannot be just a collection of past precedents, and in daily life, relationships cannot be simple optimization problems. These complex processes encompass competing values, uncertainties, and the reality that there is usually no perfect answer. Therefore, what we need today is not pure intelligence, but a power of judgment that grasps experience and the consequences of human nature. Artificial intelligence can support human judgment and sharpen analyses, but since it does not share the consequences, it must absolutely not take over the responsibility of decision-making from humans.
