Disaster in Greece: 60 Fires in 24 Hours, Army Mobilized

Greece went through a difficult test with forest fires that have been affecting the country over the past twenty-four hours and broke out at a total of sixty different locations. According to statements made by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the firefighting forces were put on alert across the country to prevent the fires from spreading. Especially the Central Macedonia region was at the center of a serious crisis with sixteen different fire fronts igniting simultaneously. Most of these concurrent fires started after 12:30 PM local time, which necessitated dividing the limited firefighting forces across multiple fronts. The assessment of the fire risk level in the region as category four, meaning 'very high', further increased the alertness of the authorities.

One of the most important factors that further increased the gravity of the situation was that many of the burning areas were located dangerously close to settlements. Emergency response teams operating in the Neoi Epivates neighborhood of Thessaloniki, Nea Kallikrateia in Halkidiki, and the Krestoni region of Kilkis sent mass alert messages via the 112 emergency number to inform residents and initiate evacuation procedures when necessary. Similarly, in the Attiki region of Athens, where the risk level was measured at category three, intense fires were reported in Aspropyrgos, Spata, and the Hill of the Forty Martyrs in the Acharnes district. However, thanks to aerial and ground interventions by firefighting units, the flames approaching these settlements were brought under control before they could grow, preventing a potential disaster.

While similar fire reports continued to arrive successively from different regions of Greece, the mobilization of the teams continued at full speed. While a fire that broke out in the Grevena region was brought under control, the fire focus in the Embonas region of the island of Rhodes was largely transformed into a safe zone. In addition, a fire that started in the Vasilika region of the island of Corfu was extinguished thanks to the rapid intervention of firefighting teams, and a second fire that broke out in Apraos on the same island was eliminated before reaching larger proportions. Despite this, extinguishing efforts continued until the morning in the Koufalia, Lipsydrio, and Krestoni regions of Halkidoni, and teams continued their efforts in the area without interruption to ensure complete extinguishment and prevent possible flare-ups.

Civil Protection authorities explicitly stated that experiencing such simultaneous fires in high-risk areas puts extreme strain on current operational planning and response forces. Emphasizing the importance of intervening in each incident within the first few minutes, firefighting units made intensive efforts to prevent the flames from reaching uncontrollable proportions. Despite all these adversities and the immense pressure on the response teams, a significant portion of the fires was extinguished in their initial stages thanks to rapid ground and aerial operations. This situation once again highlighted the critical role played by the coordination of firefighting personnel and local governments. Authorities noted that utilizing the existing manpower and equipment with maximum efficiency is decisive in preventing disaster scenarios.

Official assessments and weather forecasts for the upcoming Sunday are once again causing concern among officials who have reported fatigue. The Civil Protection organization announced the fire risk level as category four, meaning 'very high', for six different regions of the country and stated that the high risk level will continue in a large part of the rest of the country. In this context, authorities called on all citizens to avoid outdoor activities that could cause any fire and to strictly adhere to the warnings of civil protection units. Furthermore, warnings were issued stating that keeping all outdoor areas clean, including house gardens and vacant lots, is one of the most determining factors in preventing severe disasters. Officials added that individual responsibility and proactive measures are of vital importance in preventing fires.
