Zelenskiy Announces: 6 Dead, 33 Injured in Russian Attacks

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskiy announced that at least 6 people lost their lives and 33 others were injured in new and severe attacks launched by Russia across various regions of Ukraine. In statements made by officials via social media, it is noted that Russian forces targeted residential areas in the Sumi city with guided bombs. It was reported that the search and rescue operations ongoing in the region are being carried out intensively due to suspicions that there may still be people trapped under the rubble at the scene. In this horrific attack, according to initial assessments, 4 people, including a child, lost their lives, while a total of 27 people, 6 of them children, were reported injured. Officials stated that the condition of many of the injured taken to hospitals is extremely critical and they are in life-threatening danger.

Russia's airstrikes were not limited to the Sumi city; Zaporijya, a city of strategic importance in the south of the country, was similarly targeted. According to breaking news from the region, 2 people lost their lives in an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attack on Zaporijya, and 6 more people, including 1 child injured at the scene, were dispatched to the hospital. These attacks have once again raised concerns that Russian forces are deliberately targeting civilian settlements and infrastructures. Ukrainian leader Zelenskiy stated that various settlements in the Harkiv, Dnipro, and Donetsk regions have also been subjected to consecutive attacks recently, posing a risk of increasing civilian casualties in the region. This humanitarian tragedy unfolding in the region is being followed with increasing concern and reaction by the international community.

Following these tragic events, President Zelenskiy made an urgent call to the international community, particularly to allied nations, to take more decisive and active action against Russia. Zelenskiy emphasized that it is of vital importance for global partners to resolutely increase diplomatic and economic pressure on the Moscow administration in order to completely end this terror Russia has imposed on Ukraine. At this point, increasing Russia's isolation within the international community is considered one of the most critical steps that can be taken to prevent civilian casualties and establish peace. A warning was issued that Western countries must impose stricter sanctions directly targeting Russia's military capacity, otherwise the attacks will continue. The Ukrainian leader pointed out that the prolongation of this process could pose greater threats to both regional and global security.

The President of Ukraine explicitly stated that the US, G7 and G20 member countries, and allies in the European continent are among the most effective actors that Russia will listen to and that have the potential to exert pressure on it. He stated that European countries must not forget that they possess strong diplomatic, political, and economic sanction tools that can be used against an aggressively behaving Russia. In this context, to ensure irreversible damage to Russia, it is planned to primarily halt its economic heart. It was argued that pressure on Russia's energy sector, its massive oil fleet operating in international waters, and the global financial system must be increased, and that existing restrictions must be applied much more strictly. It was stated that the use of these economic and strategic sanction tools would be the most effective way to cut off the financing of Russia's war machine.

In addition to international pressure and sanctions, it was stated that it is imperative to urgently and significantly strengthen Ukraine's current defense capabilities to protect its lands and civilians. Zelenskiy specifically emphasized that taking new and concrete steps to modernize the country's air defense systems and increase their capacities is the first and foremost priority. It is a known fact that the lack of air defense systems leads to increased civilian casualties in the face of Russian missiles and UAVs. The Ukrainian leader expressed his deep gratitude to every country leader and people who continue to remain active in this difficult process, who do not leave Ukraine's calls unanswered, and who do not waste even a single day in providing the necessary support for defense. Ukraine expects its allies to continue providing high-tech military equipment support, especially air defense systems, in order to prevent potential future attacks and ensure the country's territorial integrity.
