In the Second Round of Local Elections in Germany, SPD Candidate Won Against AfD

In the second round of the local elections held in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district of Germany's Brandenburg state, the incumbent district administrator and SPD candidate Ralf Reinhardt won a clear victory against AfD state parliament member Torsten Arndt. According to preliminary results, Reinhardt secured 60.6 percent of the valid votes, pulling a significant gap ahead of his opponent. Arndt, the AfD candidate, could only manage 39.4 percent of the votes and became the losing side. For Reinhardt, this result means taking office for the third consecutive time, once again confirming his political power in the region. Reinhardt's success cemented the lead he had maintained since the first round by carrying it into the second round as well.

The first round of the election was held on 7 Haziran, and the process went to the second round because no candidate was able to secure an absolute majority. In the first round, Reinhardt received 34.7 percent of the votes, while AfD candidate Arndt came in second with 30.3 percent. Independent candidate Thomas Kresse reached 23.9 percent, and Ronald Mundt from the Prignitz-Ruppin Independent Voters' Association achieved 11.1 percent of the vote. The competition between the two candidates who made it to the second round resulted in a high turnout from the local public and ended with a distinct superiority for the SPD. During this process, Reinhardt nearly doubling his vote difference from the first round showed that the voters trusted his policies and his character in the second round.

Reinhardt's political history in the region is quite deep-rooted and remarkable. Born in 1976, Reinhardt marked a significant milestone in his political career by being elected as the youngest mayor in Brandenburg in Wusterhausen/Dosse in 2006. Reinhardt, who has been serving as the administrator of the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district since 2010, has confidently taken over this duty for his third term. Throughout his election campaign, he promised to increase the frequency of RE 6 regional express trains to improve regional transportation, to bring fiber optic internet infrastructure to every household, and to establish a promising healthcare system. These concrete promises, which directly touch the daily lives of the local people, stood out as a significant reason for preference in the eyes of the voters.

On the other hand, AfD candidate Torsten Arndt also stands out as a well-known figure in Brandenburg politics. Stating that he has been working freelance in the construction sector since 1992, Arndt has held high-level positions such as membership in the Wittstock city council, the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district council, and the Brandenburg state parliament since 2024. Having defeated SPD's Katrin Lange in the 2024 state elections to be directly elected as a member of parliament, Arndt could not achieve the same success in the local elections. Meanwhile, the classification of the AfD's Brandenburg state association as "confirmed right-wing extremist" by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution was at the center of political discussions during the election process. This situation may have influenced some voters in the region to keep their distance from the AfD.

During the election process, the stance of the BSW (Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance) also stood out as a notable development in the political arena. By announcing that it did not support either candidate, the party called on voters to boycott the election and not go to the polls. Furthermore, the district organization recommended that if voters did go, they should cross out both candidates' names on the ballot paper, thus making their votes invalid. Despite all these political dynamics and calls, the majority of those who went to the polls supported Ralf Reinhardt. As a result, while the SPD's power continues in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district, it has been seen once again that the AfD's influence across Brandenburg remains limited.
