Bird flu alarm at Antalya Bus Terminal: 700 smuggled chicks seized, arriving from Bursa

An unexpected and major smuggling case was uncovered during a routine security check at the Antalya Intercity Bus Terminal. A total of 700 live chicks, found to be transported in violation of regulations, were seized from the luggage compartment of a passenger bus stopped and inspected by municipal police teams. It was determined that the animals departed from the city of Bursa and lacked the necessary transport permits. This situation was not only considered a violation of transport regulations but also a significant public health issue. Following the incident, official procedures were immediately initiated, tightening security measures and notifying relevant authorities.

It was reported that the exact origin information of the chicken and turkey chicks, found hidden in boxes inside the luggage, could not be fully determined. This uncertainty directly raised the risks of infectious and epidemic diseases such as bird flu (avian influenza), which has caused serious global concerns in recent years. Authorities drew attention to the potential danger of transferring such live animals, whose source and health status are unknown, unsupervised via intercity passenger transport. The severity of the situation increased due to the violation of necessary biosecurity protocols. This transport operation, which violated the standards of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, could have been the harbinger of a major epidemiological threat.

Following the incident, Antalya Metropolitan Municipality teams immediately reported the situation to the Kepez District Agriculture and Forestry Directorate. Expert teams dispatched to the area conducted an investigation, and all necessary measures against the risk of an epidemic were promptly implemented. To prevent this situation, which threatened animal health and public safety, the chicks were individually confiscated. While the investigation into the matter was deepened, procedures were initiated to safely destroy or quarantine the live animals in an isolated environment. Relevant authorities announced to the public that inspections would be increased to prevent such illegal and unhealthy transportation attempts.

The process of prosecuting and punishing those responsible for this violation was also swiftly set in motion. A detailed investigation was conducted within the scope of Law No. 5996 on Veterinary Services, Plant Health, Food, and Feed. As a result of the assessments, heavy sanctions and a massive penal action were imposed in total on the bus company, which was definitively found to have transported the animals in violation of the regulations. Authorities emphasized with strict language that no concessions would be made to individuals or institutions involved in the illegal live animal trade and unauthorized transport. This penalty is also considered extremely important in terms of serving as a deterrent precedent to prevent similar violations in the sector.

Mustafa Kaya, Terminal Municipal Police Chief of the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality, made a detailed statement to the press regarding the matter. Explaining how the process began, he stated that during routine inspections carried out at the terminal in the early hours of the morning, they identified turkey and chicken chicks inside the boxes. Kaya confirmed that following the seizure of the live animals, they worked in coordination with the District Agriculture and Forestry Directorate and imposed the necessary fines on the company in question. He added that inspections would now continue more strictly and uninterruptedly in order to protect human health and elevate food safety standards. It was demonstrated once again that such operations are of critical importance for the peace and security of the city.
