Reaction to Argentina's banner: Falkland Islands request punishment from FIFA

The government of the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) condemned the Argentine players for unveiling a banner reading 'Malvinas belong to Argentina' during the pitch opening after defeating England in the 2026 World Cup semi-final. Following this action, which the islands' government stated tarnished the outcome of the game, they argued that sports should be kept separate from politics and requested FIFA to impose official sanctions regarding the matter.

The UK's Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Peter Kyle, also evaluated the developments, emphasizing that football and politics must be kept apart. Referring to FIFA's principles, Minister Kyle demanded that the incident be investigated 'unquestionably and comprehensively.' According to reports in the British press, FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Argentina to evaluate the said action as the 'political use of sports.'

The Falkland Islands, the source of the controversy, are a territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean, at the center of a sovereignty dispute between the United Kingdom and Argentina that has lasted for years. The Falkland War, which began with Argentina's military invasion attempt in 1982 and lasted for 74 days, resulted in a British victory; during the conflict, a total of 649 Argentine soldiers, 255 British soldiers, and 3 civilians lost their lives.
