CHP Calls for Postponement of Transportation Fare Hike in Çorum Until the End of the Year

Çorum Municipal Council CHP Group Deputy Chairman Tuncay Yılmaz demanded the postponement of the public transportation fare hike implemented by the municipality in temmuz until the end of the year. Yılmaz expressed his criticisms by reminding that CHP members in the Tariff Commission voted against the fare pricing agenda item during the meeting held in aralık. Stating that citizens are experiencing financial difficulties in an inflationary environment, Yılmaz emphasized that automatic price hikes put the public in an even more difficult situation. He stated that low-income and minimum-wage citizens would not be able to afford fare increases at these rates. The CHP group is calling for steps to be taken so that people can benefit from transportation services at old prices until the end of the year.

In his speech at the council, Yılmaz also reacted to tariff decisions being turned into a political issue. He claimed that the ruling party's driving up of inflation brings automatic price hikes with it, and that this is implemented without being opened for discussion at the council. He argued that the repercussions of the economic crisis experienced nationwide are also being passed on to the public by local governments. He stated that consecutive water and transportation hikes have broken the public's back. CHP council members clearly stated that they will not approve such price hikes and will continue to stand by the public.

On the other hand, the Uluslararası Hitit Festivali, planned to be held this month, was also brought to the council's agenda. Reminding that the local press and the CHP council group played a major persistent role in bringing the festival back to Çorum after many years, Tuncay Yılmaz thanked the authorities. However, he added that the public needs to be informed about the festival's organization tender and budget. He demanded a transparent explanation regarding which artists will be brought, at what costs, and through what kind of tender process. He stated that during a period when people are trying to get on public transportation amid price hikes, the burden it will bring to the municipal budget must be clarified.

Recent resignation news at the municipality was also one of the topics on the CHP Group Deputy Chairman's agenda. He stated that the reasons behind the resignation of two successful managers working at the Çorum Belediyesi in recent days must be questioned. Yılmaz compared the municipal administration to playing an instrument, warning that if the tunings are off, the entire operation will falter. He demanded clarification on whether the resignations were voluntary or the result of mobbing or pressure. He also asked for an explanation regarding whether the projects of the resigned managers aimed at beautifying the city were blocked by the administration.
