China is being shaken by multiple natural disasters occurring simultaneously in different regions and having a massive impact across the country. Severe storms and tornadoes in the central province of Hubei have resulted in the loss of eleven lives, while hundreds of others have been injured. In the southern province of Guangxi, four people died and eight went missing due to extreme rainfall brought by Typhoon Maysak. Additionally, five people lost their lives and twelve remain unaccounted for following a landslide in the northwestern province of Gansu. These back-to-back disasters have prompted the Chinese government and local authorities to launch large-scale emergency responses and search-and-rescue operations.

In Hubei province, a severe and rapidly developing convective weather event that began on Monday night affected the cities of Huangshi, Huanggang, Ezhou, and Xianning. According to officials, this meteorological phenomenon simultaneously produced severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and localized tornadoes. According to information reported by China's official news agency, Xinhua, this extreme weather event, which occurred in a very short period, caused severe winds to be recorded in 53 different municipalities; the intensity of two of these winds reached level 13. The final toll of the event reported that 14 thousand 600 people were left homeless or affected, 331 people were injured, and one person went missing.

In southern China, Typhoon Maysak, the first typhoon to make landfall this season, left deep damage in the region. Extreme rainfall in and around Nanning, the capital of Guangxi province, caused severe floods and the collapse of several dams. Dam cracks that occurred particularly in the Hengzhou area caused large amounts of water to flow downstream, submerging residential areas. While more than 84 thousand people were directly affected by this disaster in the region, more than 54 thousand people had to be urgently evacuated for their safety. In Binyang County, thousands of people were moved to emergency shelters, while power outages and river floods completely paralyzed daily life.

Meanwhile, a sudden landslide in the Renzang area of Longnan city, located in the northwestern province of Gansu, resulted in a major tragedy. The landslide suddenly buried 33 people who had gone to the area to clear dry trees in a forested zone. According to information conveyed by local media, no rainfall was recorded in the area before or after the landslide, indicating how unexpectedly the event developed. Search and rescue teams were swiftly dispatched to the area, and after operations lasting throughout the day, 21 people trapped under the rubble were reached; however, it was confirmed that five of them lost their lives and twelve others remain missing.

Amidst these multiple natural disasters, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered the mobilization of all available resources for rescue, relief, and sheltering the victims. The Chinese state is going through a period of seasonally increasing severe rainfall in its central and southern regions since mid-May, facing an additional challenge as the oceanic typhoon season enters its most active phase. Meteorologists warned that the super typhoon named 'Bavi', moving towards the country's southeast, would also start to show its effect as of Thursday. While the country is already facing extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure, closely monitoring weather conditions and keeping early warning systems active in the coming days are of vital importance.
