Migrant Smuggling Operation in Hatay: 9 Foreign Nationals Caught, Organizer Arrested

The strict inspections carried out by the Hatay Security Directorate units as part of the fight against migrant smuggling have borne fruit. A car exhibiting suspicious movements on the route between Belen and İskenderun appeared on the radar of the police teams. Following a prolonged and close surveillance, security forces stopped the vehicle in a safe area and launched a comprehensive physical inspection. During these physical checks, it was determined that a total of 9 foreign nationals were squeezed into the back seats and the trunk of the vehicle. It was understood that the said migrants did not have any legal residence or travel permits in Turkey.

The intelligence work of the security units in the region and the resolutely maintained physical checkpoints largely block illegal crossing routes. Such irregular transportation methods both threaten the safety of the local population and directly jeopardize the lives of the migrants forced to travel inside the vehicles. Transporting people in the trunk of a car was considered the clearest proof of how the driver disregarded traffic safety and human life. In order to prevent these UEFA-style and irregular migration activities, it is aimed to increase meticulous inspections at security checkpoints. The identity verification procedures of the 9 foreign nationals caught as a result of the operation were meticulously carried out at the police station. Following the completion of the identity verification processes, the individuals were handed over to the Hatay Provincial Directorate of Migration Management units to carry out the necessary administrative procedures. After the administrative process initiated at the Migration Management, it is planned to deport the individuals to their countries or to carry out the necessary procedures according to their legal statuses. Such operations are of critical importance not only for ensuring border security but also for rescuing irregular migrants from poor conditions. To ensure the flawless completion of the administrative processes, coordination between the security units and the migration management is carried out with great meticulousness.

The suspect, who was the organizer of the incident and the driver of the vehicle, was referred to the judicial authorities after the interrogation procedures at the police department. The suspect, who was arrested by the duty court on charges of human smuggling, was sent to prison and the legal process against him was initiated. The driver, who did not only face judicial punishment, also faced a severe penalty due to serious traffic rule violations he committed in the vehicle. The driver, who carried passengers in the trunk with complete disregard for traffic safety, was fined a total of 102 thousand 700 TL in administrative fines as a result of the violations. This heavy fine went on record as a clear indicator of the severe sanctions and deterrence applied by the security forces against illegal transportation in the region.

Following the inspections and the operational process of the security forces, the car used in migrant smuggling was banned from traffic by the Inter-City Highway Traffic Branch teams. The irregular transport vehicle, seized within the scope of the relevant law, was towed to the police parking lot to complete the necessary procedures. These illegal activities targeting commercial and civilian transportation in the region are being attempted to be dismantled through the large-scale operational strategies of the security forces. It was announced that inspections to be carried out on the routes in Hatay and neighboring provinces in the upcoming period will continue with the same determination and uninterruptedly. This successful operation in Hatay is considered only a part of the comprehensive fight conducted against irregular migration and human smuggling networks in the country.
