Iran's Attacks on Tankers in the Strait of Hormuz Draw Regional and Global Reaction

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia announced that Iran attacked the Saudi tanker Wadiyan while it was passing through the Strait of Hormuz. While this action was strongly condemned in the official statement, it was emphasized that these attacks constitute a serious violation of international law. It was stated that along with the endangerment of maritime transportation security in the region, energy supply chains are also under great risk. The Riyadh administration demanded that Tehran immediately stop its actions that undermine maritime security. Furthermore, it was stated that Iran will be held fully responsible for all consequences that may arise from these events.

In the Saudi press statement, it was shared that not only the ship flying its own flag was targeted, but also the tanker named Al Rekayyat belonging to Katare was attacked by the Iranian armed forces. According to data obtained by the Reuters news agency, the Katare-owned liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker Al Rekayyat suffered highly severe damage as a result of a missile attack it faced in the Strait of Hormuz. It was learned that a fire broke out in the engine room of the ship, which was difficult to bring under control. This incident revealed the extent of Iran's increasing threats to maritime traffic in the region.

Qatar Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Macid bin Muhammed el-Ensari accused Iran of 'full legal responsibility' regarding the attack on their tankers. Qatari foreign affairs officials called in the chargé d'affaires of the Iranian embassy located in the capital Doha to the ministry of foreign affairs and delivered an official protest note regarding the incident. This diplomatic move reflects Qatar's growing anger towards Iran's Caspian Sea and Persian Gulf policies. Although there are bilateral economic relations between the two countries, Qatar clearly stated that no concessions should be made regarding the security of sea routes.

The events were not limited to regional powers and also drew the attention of the USA. According to the information reported by Axios portal reporter Barak Ravid, an unnamed senior American official stated that Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz are absolutely unacceptable. The US administration underlined that Iran's actions will have serious consequences in the region and the world. Nevertheless, it was reported that American negotiators continue to work in good faith to reach a final agreement. This statement once again revealed how fragile the diplomatic balances between the US and Iran are.

In a direct economic response to Iran's increasing aggression, the US Department of the Treasury made an important decision on 7 July. It officially announced that it had suspended the validity of the license that previously allowed the delivery, sale, and other transactions of Iranian oil and petroleum products. This sanctions decision was directly linked to Iran's recent aggressive actions in the Strait of Hormuz. It is evaluated that the aim of the decision is to cut Iran's energy revenues and dissuade it from its aggressive policies. While this development led to the further isolation of Iran, it also created pressure on global oil prices and energy markets.
