20 Thousand Vehicles Stayed Off the Road Thanks to İZDENİZ Additional Trips

İZDENİZ, one of the maritime transportation subsidiaries of İzmir Büyükşehir Belediyesi, took an important step on the Bostanlı-Üçkuyular route to relieve city traffic. The additional trip initiative, launched to offer drivers a faster, more comfortable, and eco-friendly transportation alternative, received great interest in a short period. It was reported that approximately 20 thousand vehicles chose the sea route between 4 May and 28 June. This figure reveals that the initiative achieved its goals and that drivers are inclined to change their habits in route planning. Thus, the congestion on urban roads was visibly reduced.

The most important feature of the initiative stands out as diverting the density, especially during post-work hours, to the sea. In order to prevent evening traffic chaos, the trip frequency between 17.00 and 19.00 was significantly increased. Thanks to this, drivers wanting to return home after work saved time by using car ferries instead of waiting for hours on the roads. Initially conducted with 6 ships, the additional trips were expanded in recent weeks by incorporating a 7th ship into service due to high demand. The trips, which depart approximately every seven minutes during peak hours, both minimized the waiting time of ferry users and significantly increased the overall capacity of the system.

Approximately twenty thousand vehicles that preferred sea transportation over road transport offered a great breathing opportunity not only for their own drivers but also for the entire city. This transition is considered a clear indication that the İzmir Körfezi is being used more actively and efficiently for transportation purposes. This maritime transportation also contributed to reducing both noise and air pollution by decreasing the number of vehicles on road traffic. In this period when climate change and sustainability issues gain global importance, İzmir's investment in such transportation models is seen as a good example of contemporary municipal governance. The fact that drivers show such intense interest proves that sea transportation can become not just an alternative, but an indispensable part of urban transportation.
