Security measures increased for the Mexico-England match in Monterrey

The state of Nuevo León in Mexico has decided to open new viewing areas for spectators in order to prevent crowds and security issues prior to the upcoming Mexico-England football match. The unpleasant situations such as the stampede, gas inhalation, and the collapse of entrance gates during the Fan Fest Monterrey event at Parque Fundidora compelled authorities to take such measures. State Governor Samuel García released a video message regarding the matter, announcing that security is the priority for the critical match on Sunday and that work has been initiated to set up new screens.

Governor García emphasized in his statement that the capacity of Fundidora Park is specifically limited and requested citizens to explore alternative venues instead of flocking to this area. Currently, there is a capacity for 50 thousand people only in the Explanada area at Macroplaza; however, within the scope of new planning, additional areas such as the front of Museo de Historia, around LAB Nuevo León, Plaza Gastronómica, and near Teatro de la Ciudad will be put into service. With the activation of these new areas, the goal is to increase the total capacity where the match can be watched safely from 50 thousand to 100 thousand, thus preventing the crowd from concentrating at a single point.

Within the framework of security protocols, restrictions have been imposed on entry times to the main Fan Fest area; accordingly, spectators will be able to enter the area no later than 15:30, after which a security cordon will be created and new entries to Fundidora will be closed. Additionally, screen installations are planned not only in squares but also in sports facilities. The Governor stated that in talks held with professional sports teams Tigres, Rayados, and Sultanes, the possibility of putting the baseball stadium and the Monterrey and Universitario stadiums into use is being discussed.

The measures taken are not limited to the state capital; local municipalities have also been included in the process. It is being evaluated that every municipality in the state will set up large screens to broadcast the match in at least one park or square within its boundaries. With this move, not only will the excessive crowd in central areas be relieved, but also safer alternatives that are closer and more accessible to citizens will be offered. The primary goal of the plan is to ensure that football excitement is experienced in a controlled and peaceful manner throughout the entire state without compromising security.

In terms of public health and public order, this expanded venue strategy can be described as a proactive step taken by local governments to manage the high density brought by sports competitions. Experiences from recent matches where incidents occurred clearly show that security risks increase when the number of participants exceeds the physical venue capacity. Therefore, the Nuevo León government aims to minimize possible negative scenarios by using this match as a test bed and distributing viewing opportunities geographically. All details have been carefully considered so that both local residents and visiting foreign football fans can watch the match with pleasure and safety.
