Nepal flood disaster: death toll rises to 939, 3,925 missing

The death toll from the severe flood disaster that began last Wednesday in Nepal's northern and central regions has risen to 939. According to a statement by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 36 new deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours. The number of missing persons decreased by 322 to 3,925; this drop was largely due to the number of missing workers at hydroelectric projects falling from 933 to 639.

Search and rescue operations continue with more than 21,000 security personnel. Relief supplies were delivered to affected areas by 37 trucks, 37 Bolero vehicles, and 9 helicopter flights. It was reported that 592 foreign nationals are still unaccounted for. Prime Minister Balendra Shah announced that financial assistance has been provided to victims through a fund formed with domestic and international donations.

Including losses in Tibet, the total death toll is calculated at 955 and the total missing at 4,471. A total of 5.87 billion Nepalese rupees (approximately 38.59 million US dollars) was deposited into the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and the Himalayan and Laxmi banks. Various countries and organizations have also pledged financial aid.
