Niger State Begins Renovation of Bako Kontagora Stadium Ahead of 2026/27 NPFL Season

With less than 60 days remaining until the start of the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, the Niger State Government has officially commenced rehabilitation and improvement works to bring the Bako Kontagora Stadium, located in the city of Minna, up to international standards. The project was handed over to the contracting firm by the Ministry of Sports Development supervisor Jacob Baba-Yisa, with this step being described as a concrete indicator of State Governor Umaru Bago's commitment to sports and his determination to provide quality sports infrastructure across the state. Statements indicated that the stadium's maintenance and repair works would create a more conducive competitive environment for the local team Niger Tornadoes, while also contributing to the spread of sports at the grassroots and the discovery of young talents.

In assessments by the Ministry, it was emphasized that the modernization of the stadium would not only revitalize sports clubs but also stimulate economic activities in the region and create new employment opportunities for young people. Niger Tornadoes Football Club Chairman Abubakar Kuso, speaking at the handover ceremony, congratulated Governor Bago for approving this visionary project, expressing that the investment holds great importance for football development and has significantly boosted team morale. Kuso stated his belief that the construction firm would complete the project in accordance with the planned features and timeline, adding that these renovations would provide the team with a deserving home advantage in the league's challenging marathon.

Isaac Obonyano, Managing Director of the firm undertaking the responsibility of realizing the project, announced that they aim to complete the works within 40 days while fulfilling their commitments to the Niger State Government. Obonyano shared details including the installation of a modern synthetic playing surface and the upgrading of the stadium's other critical facilities to contemporary standards as the most important part of the comprehensive rehabilitation plan. It was reported that the new weather-resistant synthetic surface to be laid would provide a durable surface available for use year-round, capable of hosting not only football matches but also various sports events.

Upon completion of the project, Bako Kontagora Stadium will be opened for use as the official home ground of the Niger Tornadoes Football Club for the 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League season. Intense coordination and work is being carried out among all stakeholders to ready the facility before the league starts, a process predicted to be a turning point for both the team's success and the city's sports infrastructure. The improvements at the stadium aim to increase the potential for national and international competitions to come to the state, making Niger State more visible on the Nigerian sports map.
