Call to Social Media Giants at the School Attacks Investigation Commission

The School Attacks Investigation Commission, established within the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), has reached its final stage to complete its comprehensive studies. The commission will address an important agenda at its ninth meeting, which it will hold on the upcoming Tuesday. At this critical meeting, senior officials from the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Interior will give detailed briefings to the deputies. In the officials' presentations, an assessment of the current situation regarding the recent increase in school attacks is expected to be made. Additionally, the current security measures taken to prevent similar disasters from happening again and the new measures to be integrated into the system will be emphasized.

One of the most important topics that the ministry officials will particularly focus on in their presentations is the balance between security and education. It will be meticulously ensured that the strict security measures taken do not disrupt or negatively affect normal educational activities in schools. Protecting the psychological well-being of students, providing a safe learning environment, and simultaneously maximizing physical security are among the main goals. The deputies will also discuss the practical problems experienced during this process and the challenges encountered in the field with the officials. Thus, both the effectiveness of physical measures such as security cameras and personnel, and counseling services will be discussed.

Another important session of the commission that will attract attention this week is the meeting to be held with representatives of global digital media giants. The Türkiye representatives of massive platforms such as X, Google, Meta, and TikTok will attend the commission to explain their content management processes on their networks. Particularly, the exposure of children and young people to digital risks, violent content, or cyberbullying on the internet will be examined in detail. The algorithms and security filters developed by social media companies to prevent young users from being negatively affected will be presented to the deputies. Following this meeting, the representatives are expected to answer the intensive and critical questions of the deputies and evaluate the steps regarding regulatory expectations in Türkiye.

When the working calendar of the Parliamentary commission is examined, it is seen that eight comprehensive meetings have been held so far. In this process, it stands out that field studies were conducted twice not only in Ankara but also in the Şanlıurfa and Kahramanmaraş provinces, where the events reached their most shocking dimensions. As part of the field investigations, commission members visited the graves of the teachers and students who lost their lives in the tragic events and prayed for their souls. Additionally, they had the opportunity to meet with grieving families and listen to first-hand and highly emotional testimonies regarding the moment of the incident. These field visits ensured that the commission's report went beyond being merely an administrative or technical document and reflected the social trauma of the events.

Having conducted meetings with all officials at the local and national levels, the commission has created a very broad database for its report. Views were exchanged with a wide range of stakeholders, from school principals to local administrations, primarily governorships, and from academicians who are experts in their fields ranging from education to security, to non-governmental organizations. This rich experience is of critical importance for identifying the shortcomings in school security in Türkiye and producing radical solution proposals. All the findings obtained will be discussed in the new sessions starting on Tuesday and will begin to take their final form to be transformed into the final report. This comprehensive study, which the commission will complete, could pave the way for fundamental changes that will shape the future of school security policies in the country.
