Pentagon nominee: Cost of US-Iran war reaches $29 billion

US Department of Defense Under Secretary nominee Jules Hurst announced in his speech before the Senate Armed Services Committee that the military conflict with Iran cost American taxpayers approximately 29 billion dollars by the end of May. Hurst announced the figure in question during his confirmation hearing, and the focus of the discussion was defense spending and the financial impact of the recent conflicts.

Regarding the currency and transparency of the announced figure, Maine Senator Angus King harshly criticized Hurst. Hurst, who served as the Pentagon's acting comptroller until 20 May, was criticized by committee members for failing to provide up-to-date data. King emphasized that the American people deserve a clear and transparent explanation regarding the true cost of the war.

Hurst stated that the 29 billion dollar estimate was the most up-to-date data at the time of his departure and that this figure only covered operational expenses. Stating that weapons and ammunition expenditures exceeded 20 billion dollars, Hurst admitted that additional costs such as the repair of damaged bases and regional infrastructure reconstruction were not taken into account.
