According to the report prepared by the Portekiz Renewable Energy Association (APREN), 75.6 percent of the country's electricity production in the first six months of 2026 was supplied from renewable sources. During this period, a total of 25.806 GWh of electricity was produced, of which approximately 19.509 GWh was generated by clean energy technologies such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric. This rate clearly proves the country's determination and success in the field of clean energy across Europe. The data in question are of critical importance in terms of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering carbon emissions. In this period alone, a major technical achievement was recorded with 692 hours (approximately 29 full days) where renewable energy production was sufficient to meet all national consumption.

The reflections in the electricity market are also remarkable, and this situation has provided direct relief on energy costs. In the first half of 2026, the average price in Portekiz's Electricity Market (MIBEL) was realized at 48,8 €/MWh, showing an average decrease of 22.9 percent compared to the same period of the previous year. This competitive pricing has made the country one of the markets offering the most cost-effective electricity in Europe. Low energy costs both directly positively affect consumer bills and increase the international competitiveness of industrial facilities. In addition, the cheap and clean energy supply stands out as one of the most important factors attracting the interest of foreign investors.

The magnitude of economic and environmental benefits is also increasing remarkably. In the said six-month period, thanks to renewable energy sources, 544 million Euro was saved in natural gas imports and 357 million Euro in electricity imports. In addition to this, the cost avoided from CO2 emission licenses reached 356 million Euro, and the total savings in the market under the Special Regime Production (PRE) reached a massive figure of 3,9 billion Euro. Even when only the month of june is examined, it is seen that 102 million Euro was saved from natural gas imports and 6 million Euro from electricity imports. Bringing these massive financial resources into the country directly contributes to closing the current account deficit and macroeconomic stability.

Looking from a European perspective, Portekiz stands out as one of the continent's leading countries in energy transition. In the Europe-wide ranking showing renewable energy integration rates in different countries of the continent, Portekiz succeeded in ranking fourth with a share of 75.6 percent. The countries that left Portekiz behind in this field were Norveç with 97.2 percent, Danimarka with 94.8 percent, and Avusturya with 77.2 percent, respectively. This ranking is a clear indication of Portekiz's aggressive and successful green energy policies, which make full use of its geographical advantages. Experts attribute the country's achievement of this level to stable incentive mechanisms implemented for over a decade and modernization steps in the grid infrastructure.

APREN Market Intelligence and Policies Coordinator Susana Serôdio emphasized that the obtained data prove the structural solidity of Portekiz's renewable energy infrastructure. However, Serôdio added that urgent steps need to be taken to fully evaluate the current production amount and make the growth momentum permanent. The rapid modernization of existing electricity transmission grids, the integration of large-scale energy storage solutions into the market, and making market rules more flexible are listed among the most critical priorities. As a matter of fact, from 2016 to 2026, Portekiz's renewable energy capacity increased by a total of 9.115 MW, realizing a tremendous growth of 68 percent, with remarkable leaps recorded especially in solar energy. Authorities state that the pace of infrastructure investments must absolutely not be slowed down in order to sustain this progress.
