Road Construction from Radan Dağı to Prokuplje in Sırbistan Not Completed

Assistants to the President of Sırbistan, Aleksandar Vučić, announced in a statement made in Donji Sinkovac near Leskovac that the ten-kilometer road section between Gajtan and Prokuplje has still not been asphalted. This statement has once again brought public curiosity regarding the delay of infrastructure works in the region to the agenda. The failure to complete this route, which has a total length of 65 kilometers, causes the transportation problems of the local people to continue. Authorities state that ten million euros need to be spent for the remaining part and that efforts are being made to complete the work as soon as possible. It is stated that this road project is extremely important for regional development.

President Vučić announced that once the road is completed, travel time between Leskovac and Prokuplje will significantly decrease, and the journey will take approximately one hour and fifteen minutes. In the current situation, this distance takes a long time of one hour and forty-five minutes, as also stated by the mayor of Leskovac. It is thought that this waste of time negatively affects both commercial activities and the daily lives of citizens. With the new road entering service, it is aimed to make inter-regional transportation much faster and more comfortable. This significant decrease in travel times promises to significantly reduce logistics costs.

The construction of the said road has been ongoing for a few years, but the route did not progress as initially planned. According to the initial plan, the road was expected to pass through a part of Radan Dağı within the borders of the Bojnik municipality and next to the old Mountaineering House, where many weekend homes are located. It is stated that if such a route had been followed, the length of the road would have been much shorter and the construction could have been completed faster. However, it has been learned that some changes were made during the project and the route was redirected to pass through Gornji Gajtan, affiliated with the Medveđa municipality. This route change may have contributed to the lengthening of the project and the increase in its costs.

Behind the change of the road's route lies the strategy of revitalizing regional tourism and connecting thermal centers. It is aimed to reach more visitors by integrating spas such as Sijarinska Banja, located within the borders of the Medveđa municipality, into the new road network. Through this, it is intended to support not only the improvement of the transportation network but also the local economy and the tourism sector. Authorities argue that this vision will provide significant economic benefits to the region in the long run. However, some critics think that the lengthening of the road delays current transportation needs.

In general, this highway project stands out as part of a broader infrastructure vision aimed at connecting the southern regions of Sırbistan to each other. Completing the ten-kilometer unpaved section as soon as possible is seen as a critical stage for the success of the project. Local governments and the central government continue to cooperate to ensure the necessary financing and overcome technical obstacles.
