Holiday declared for all educational institutions in Thrissur due to flood risk

In Thrissur district, in the Indian state of Kerala, authorities have decided to declare a temporary holiday for all educational institutions in the region. According to the official statement made by the district administration, this holiday decision is implemented for the beginning of July 2026, specifically for Saturday, July 4. This measure was taken following reports of heavy rainfall from the regions and the observation of a concerning rise in water levels in rivers and dams. Authorities prioritized the safety of students and citizens against potential adversities when making this precautionary decision. In this scope, along with public and private schools, various course centers and kindergarten-level educational institutions are also considered within this holiday application.

In the directive published with the signature of District Collector Shikha Surendran, it was stated that the scope of the holiday was kept quite broad and covers all institutions following different educational curricula. Accordingly, state schools, state-aided private schools, fully private schools, and central educational institutions (for example, schools following the CBSE and ICSE curriculum) are among the institutions affected by this holiday. Additionally, childcare centers known as Anganwadis operating in the district, madrasahs providing religious education, and private education centers called tutoring centers are also included in the holiday decision. The decision is not limited to one or two institutions but is spread over a wide spectrum by being applied to all structures providing educational services throughout the district. Aiming to minimize the impact of adverse weather conditions on children and educational staff, this decision covers all components of the educational community. In statements made by authorities, it was emphasized that they acted upon the risk that ongoing and occasionally intensifying rains in the district could negatively affect daily life and, in particular, educational activities. Sudden rises in water levels in the region's water basins and dams indicate a potential flood or inundation danger. Therefore, declaring a holiday as a preventive measure so that students do not encounter any negativity while going to or at school is seen as the most correct solution. It was emphasized that security measures could be further tightened in light of meteorological data and local forecasts if the rainfall continues to affect the region. During this process, the sensitivity of parents and students and their follow-up of developments regarding the issue are of great importance.

On the other hand, in the announcement made by the district administration, it was clearly stated that previously planned and scheduled exams and interview processes would be exempt from this holiday application. That is, written exams or oral interviews to be held on dates previously determined by official institutions, which are of critical importance for students or candidates, will be carried out as planned. This situation stands out as an exceptional decision taken to ensure that the educational academic calendar and the exam processes of candidates are not disrupted. Students and participants taking exams need to confirm that exam venues are open and that exams will be held. Thus, the general holiday application will not disrupt the exam calendar, and academic processes can continue without interruption.

Finally, district officials issued an important warning to citizens and especially drivers to be cautious against possible risks and not to travel unless necessary. Due to the continuation of rainfall and rising water levels, it is stipulated to be careful, especially in flood-risk areas and on roads. Citizens are asked not to go out in traffic except for emergencies and to carefully follow official warnings and instructions to be issued by authorities. The disaster management department and district administration make it mandatory to comply with all measures taken for public safety and to remain aware of developments. Public cooperation and sensitivity are considered the most important factor in overcoming these adverse weather conditions.
