Turning point in the War in Ukraine: Russia captured Kostiantynivka

The Russia-Ukraine war entered its 1591st day as of July 4, 2026, and the Kremlin officially announced in the morning hours of Moscow time that the strategically important city of Kostiantynivka in Eastern Ukraine was fully under control. Developments in this region, one of the bloodiest fronts of the war, have once again revealed that this industrial city with a population of approximately 78,000 serves as a gateway for Russia's advance. While there has been no official confirmation from Ukrainian authorities that the city has fallen, it was reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin received a briefing from military command and congratulated the soldiers participating in the operation. This development represents a critical stage in Russia's strategy to capture the entire Donbas region.

According to statements made by Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitri Peskov, it was stated that the city of Kostiantynivka is now fully under Russian control and Ukrainian forces have been pushed back. This move, which could change the course of the war, shows that Russia has gained a significant success by strengthening its military presence in the region following long-standing clashes. Although the city had a significant population before the war, due to the intensity of the conflicts, the vast majority of the local population had to leave the region. Kostiantynivka has been the most critical operational target for Russia on the front line of over 1000 kilometers in Eastern Ukraine since late 2025. The fact that the city is one of the largest logistics and transportation centers in Eastern Ukraine makes it indispensable from a military point of view.
