Teams from the Yunanistan Police Department of Combating Organized Crime conducted a comprehensive operation against a violent criminal organization that blew up bank ATMs across the country and stole vehicles. During the operation, a key figure who was the leader of the said criminal organization was neutralized. The suspect was taken into custody on the afternoon of 7 Temmuz 2026 as a result of the meticulous work of the police from the Department of Crimes Against Property. At the same time, detailed searches were carried out in the houses and other addresses supported by operational teams, targeting the areas used by the suspect. This operation was successfully completed following months of intelligence work and pre-investigation processes.
The detained suspect had an outstanding arrest warrant containing numerous serious charges. These charges included very serious crimes such as establishing a criminal organization, attempted murder, aggravated theft, causing an explosion, violating explosive substance laws, and official document forgery. According to a statement made by the Yunanistan Police (EL.AS.), the activities of this criminal organization date back at least to February of the year 2025. It was determined that the organization specialized in blowing up ATMs in various rural areas of the country to seize large amounts of cash. After all collected evidence was presented to the authorized prosecutor's office, official proceedings were initiated to capture this individual in the leadership cadre of the organization.
The modus operandi of the criminal organization had a highly professional and planned structure. Organization members used vehicles stolen from the Atina region as 'operational' vehicles, driving to the countryside with these vehicles to identify targets. It was understood that these individuals were equipped with heavy weapons while committing criminal activities and did not hesitate to use these weapons to secure their escape. The suspects used electric cutting tools to open the outer parts of the ATMs, and then shattered the safes with homemade explosive devices they set up. After stealing the cash cassettes inside, they quickly moved away from the crime scene, making themselves untraceable.
Taking very strict measures to make the work of law enforcement difficult while carrying out their illegal activities, the gang strictly avoided using mobile phones during operational planning. It was determined that, in addition to special equipment used to bypass vehicle security systems, they used various concealment techniques to hide license plates and prevent the detection of biological traces. It was stated that the individual arrested as the leader of the organization transferred his knowledge and technical know-how to other members, thereby ensuring the successful execution of the operations. This high level of organization and technological equipment stood out as one of the main reasons for the police conducting a challenging month-long investigation.
Numerous illegal materials, believed to belong to the gang leader, were seized during the searches conducted. Among these materials were two stolen operational vehicles, mobile phones and SIM cards, a drone, burglary tools, and 26 grams of unprocessed cannabis. As a result of preliminary examinations, at least 9 ATM bombing incidents, 3 vehicle thefts, and various other crimes such as license plate theft have been solved so far. Additionally, it was learned that the organization fired at police officers and fled following an ATM bombing action in the Argyolida region in July of the year 2025. It was announced that the investigation continues at full speed to catch the other members of the gang, which is believed to have obtained approximately 440.000 Euro in illegal income.
