Close Call for Mine Disaster in Zonguldak: Worker Injured at TTK Kozlu

In Zonguldak's coal production center Kozlu district, a life-threatening accident occurred at a mine operating under the Türkiye Taş Kömürü Kurumu (TTK). This incident, which once again highlights how risky the working conditions of mines are, caused great sadness hundreds of meters below the ground. In the accident at TTK Kozlu Müessese Müdürlüğü, a miner was seriously injured after being hit by an object on the head and was taken to hospital due to the severity of his condition.

When the details of the incident were examined, it was learned that the accident occurred in the Kozlu Müessese Müdürlüğü 5. Kartiye section, at the -560 elevation level. The mine worker Özkan Özdemir, who was conducting production work at this depth, became the target of an unexpected accident during his work. Despite the losses, it was determined that a piece of rock broke loose and skidded during work, first hitting the support prop in the mine, and then changing direction to hit the worker's head with force.

Immediately after the accident, first aid was administered to the injured worker at the scene by his colleagues and health teams in the mine. Özkan Özdemir was quickly removed from the mine due to the open wound on his head and was transported by ambulance to the Emergency Service of Bülent Ecevit University (BEÜ) Faculty of Medicine Hospital. It was stated that the transfer to the hospital and the initial treatment process were managed quickly, and the injured person's health condition was closely monitored.

According to statements from hospital sources, it was learned that there was no concerning picture regarding the miner's condition, his life was not in danger, and he was conscious. Despite this good news, question marks continue to arise regarding the risks miners face daily and the job safety measures. The worker's circle and family, under the shock of the event, are following developments with the hope that there is no permanent damage.

Authorities announced that an administrative investigation and inquiry have been launched regarding the occupational accident, and work has begun to determine the cause and responsibility for the incident. The adequacy of safety measures taken in mines and the operation of inspection mechanisms will be scrutinized to prevent the recurrence of such accidents. In order to prevent similar events that shake the mining history of Zonguldak, taking additional measures based on the results of the investigation remains on the agenda.
