EV sales rising in Germany: Iran-related price hike and incentives were effective

In Germany, the heart of the automotive industry, despite the long-standing sluggish demand for electric vehicles (EV), strong signs of recovery have been seen since June. The most important reasons for this revival in the market are the sharp increases in fuel prices due to the United States and Israel targeting Iran, along with the German government reinstating incentive mechanisms for electric vehicles.

According to official statistics announced by the country's transport authorities on July 3, new registration numbers for electric vehicles increased by a full 78.2% compared to the same month last year, reaching 84 thousand 57. This striking rise created a stark contrast with the declines seen in the same period, with approximately 16.8% for gasoline vehicles and 5.1% for diesel vehicles. With this performance, electric models accounted for approximately one quarter, or 24.8%, of all new cars sold in June, significantly expanding their market share.

Behind this positive picture in the sector lies the economic anxiety of the German public against fluctuations in fuel prices triggered by developments regarding Iran. Although the government tried to keep pump prices under control by lowering taxes on gasoline and diesel fuels during May and June, the end of these reductions as of July has caused prices to trend upwards again, driving consumers to seek alternatives. Uncertainty about the future course of fuel prices has accelerated citizens' inclination towards electric vehicles to protect their budgets.

Changes in the government's incentive policies also played a decisive role in this demand increase. The administration had officially announced that it allocated an important resource of 3 billion euros in January of this year to spread electric vehicles and would launch a new support program covering approximately 800 thousand vehicles between 2026 and 2029. Within the scope of this program, which found great resonance in the public, it was envisaged to provide a maximum of 6 thousand euros in cash aid for each qualifying vehicle, and applications started to be taken from May onwards.

Looking at the almost non-uniform course of the electric vehicle market in Germany, the deep impact of economic and political developments on consumer behavior is clearly seen. When the necessity brought by the increase in fuel costs combines with the financial relief created by state support, electric vehicles have entered a path of growth after a long period of stagnation. This situation shows that the German automobile market is undergoing a clear evolution from traditional structure to environmentally friendly technologies and how external factors can shape market dynamics.
