38 Degrees in an Avusturya Daycare: Municipality Rejected Cooling System, Parents are Outraged

The extreme temperatures in the town of Königsbrunn am Wagram, located in the Aşağı Avusturya state of Avusturya, have caused a major crisis at a local kindergarten. While the indoor temperature of the daycare is claimed to have reached exactly 38 degrees, this situation directly threatens the health of the children and the teachers. The fact that the authorities and the municipality have not taken any concrete steps regarding this problem so far is increasingly fueling the anger of the families. The incident has ceased to be just a local issue and has brought the climate conditions in educational institutions across the country to the agenda. Experts are issuing serious warnings that temperatures at this level could have permanent negative effects on the physical development of young children.

Herbert K., one of the parents who is extremely uncomfortable with the situation, expressed his reaction by laying out the events before the public. According to Herbert's statements, his son returns home from the daycare every day drenched in sweat, flushed red in the face, and utterly exhausted. While the temperature in some rooms of the daycare exceeds 29 degrees even in the early morning hours, these figures reach unbearable levels in the afternoon. It is becoming physically impossible for children to play or continue their basic education in this environment. Families emphasize that they feel their children are being left in a virtual hell and demand that these inhumane conditions be corrected immediately.

The municipality, on the other hand, firmly rejected the idea of integrating a cooling system into the daycare due to costs. The investment of approximately 100.000 Avro for the installation of a ceiling-type cooling or air conditioning system was deemed too high a price by the local authorities. The administration stated that they prefer to implement much lower-cost and passive solutions instead of this massive expense. These include traditional methods such as leaving the windows open at night to ventilate the rooms and making sure to pull down the blinds and shutters throughout the day. However, parents argue that in today's increasingly extreme heatwaves, such simple measures are absolutely inadequate and merely represent an attempt to ignore the problem.

This incident, which has caused a wide public resonance in the Avusturya press, has led to the questioning of infrastructure and air conditioning standards in educational institutions across the country. Experts are calling the authorities to action, reminding them that young children and the elderly are the risk groups most affected by extreme heat. It is stated that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can rapidly lead to fluid loss (dehydration), severe weakness, and lay the groundwork for more advanced health crises in children. Furthermore, it is expressed that such adverse physical conditions also prevent children from relaxing psychologically and learning efficiently in the school environment. Therefore, this situation is not merely a lack of comfort, but an urgent problem that must be addressed directly within the scope of public health and children's rights.

Without allowing the problem to be brushed aside, parents are resolutely waiting for local authorities to find a permanent and scientific solution. Today, where climate change is felt increasingly severely, it is obvious that extremely hot summers are no longer an exception, but an ongoing rule. For this reason, equipping public buildings such as schools and daycares with modern air conditioning systems has become a basic necessity, not a luxury. Parents emphasize that there must now be an end to authorities sacrificing children's health under the excuse of cost. It is demanded at a national level that the infrastructure of daycare buildings be urgently brought up to appropriate standards to prevent similar tragic conditions from occurring in the upcoming summer months.
