Creator of Dragon Age Blames EA: I Will Never Play Veilguard

Although Dragon Age: The Veilguard was considered a candidate for the best RPG game of 2024, it failed to generate the expected interest upon its release. Despite having some good ideas, the game was evaluated by critics as merely a mediocre work. Executives at Electronic Arts (EA) tried to salvage the situation by praising the game's quality. However, the expectations of the players and critics could hardly be considered unfair for a project that had been in development for nearly ten years. Fans of the series had been dreaming of a flawless sequel for years.

As it is known, EA was insistent on turning the Dragon Age series into a live-service game. During the roughly ten-year production process, the project consisted of a combination of numerous scattered ideas presented by various developers who had left the studio. One of these names was David Gaider, who joined BioWare right after Baldur's Gate and remained at the company until 2016. Although Gaider contributed to the development of legendary games such as KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights, he made his major breakthrough by creating the Dragon Age universe. The fact that he designed the foundational world and rules of the series significantly increased the value of this universe in the eyes of the fans.

David Gaider, the original creator of the series, caused a huge reaction by announcing that he flatly refused to see The Veilguard with his own eyes. Gaider stated that whether the game achieved commercial success or not was of no importance to him. The creator, expressing that the development team took over the project and put forward a completely different version in line with their own vision, emphasized that he did not want to know how the universe was altered. Gaider, admitting that the main reason driving him to this decision was pure selfishness and a sense of ownership, expressed that watching this universe, which he saw as his own child, being shaped differently by others would cause him great pain.

In addition to this, Gaider said he had no intention of directly criticizing the game's quality, but he knew very well what was going on behind the scenes. The famous creator, who laid all the responsibility for the failure squarely on Electronic Arts, claimed that the management had paralyzed the process from the very beginning. According to his words, EA did everything in their power to doom the game to failure, and this situation negatively affected the creative processes within the studio. Gaider also added that the game failed to reach the expected level of creativity and that commercial targets were not met, harshly criticizing EA's purely profit-oriented strategy. He emphasized that if the very high profitability threshold set by the company was not reached, the quality or artistic value of the game became completely meaningless.

After the latest Dragon Age game proved to be a disappointment, BioWare appears to be a studio that has lost its former strength and identity. The lead writers and producers of The Veilguard recently decided to leave the company, and the studio continues to operate with a reduced staff. They are currently focusing all their energy and resources on the new Mass Effect game, which fans are eagerly anticipating. Without making any other announcements, the team leaves everyone wondering about when the next game in the legendary space-themed series will be released. While it is currently unknown how long the development process will take, whether former BioWare talents will be involved in this new project continues to be a matter of curiosity in the gaming world.
