The Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (ESKİ) continues its investments in renewable energy without slowing down as part of its climate change mitigation strategies. The Solar Power Plant (GES), installed on the roof of the Drinking and Utility Water Treatment Plant, not only directly benefits the environment by producing clean energy. It also makes a significant contribution to preventing carbon emissions by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. This project sets a concrete and effective example of how local governments can implement the concept of sustainability in public services. Authorities state that they are pursuing the goal of providing uninterrupted and high-quality service in water management in an integrated manner with environmentally friendly energy policies.
When the 2025 data is examined, the environmental impact of the said solar power plant has reached a highly remarkable level. The release of 854,20 tons of carbon emissions into the atmosphere was prevented within this year alone. This figure represents a concrete and measurable step taken against the devastating effects of the climate crisis. This environmental achievement provides the same impact as protecting approximately 34 thousand 168 red pine trees in nature. Such a carbon offsetting is considered a breath of fresh air for the city's ecosystem, as well as an indicator of how serious its green vision is. With the increase in the production capacity of the plant, these environmental benefits are expected to grow even further in the future.
The system, which has a total installed capacity of 1.100 MWe, relies on a comprehensive infrastructure consisting of 2 thousand 657 solar panels. Throughout 2025, exactly 1 million 786 thousand 965 kWh of electrical energy was produced through these panels. The clean energy obtained was sufficient to meet 11,4 percent of the total energy needs of the Drinking and Utility Water Treatment Plant. This ratio inspires the sector by proving how much of a large facility's energy consumption can be met from renewable sources. The utilization of the generated energy for the facility's own needs minimizes energy transmission losses, maximizing the efficiency of the system.
One of the greatest advantages brought by clean energy production was the significant reduction of the carbon footprint caused by electricity consumption. This investment helps protect public resources not only environmentally but also economically. Lowering energy costs allows the saved budget to be redirected to other needs of the city. In line with climate change adaptation goals, the system supports the much more efficient and conscious use of natural resources. The ESKİ General Directorate explicitly states that while increasing quality in water management, it also keeps energy efficiency and renewable resource utilization among its priority areas of work.
Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ayşe Ünlüce emphasized the importance of these investments, drawing attention to the fact that the effects of the climate crisis are felt more and more every day. Stating that, as a municipality, they resolutely continue taking steps that protect the environment and increase energy efficiency, Ünlüce expressed that while preparing the city for the future, they consider the right to life of future generations, not just today's. According to Ünlüce, the energy obtained from the sun efficiently utilizes public resources and protects nature. She emphasized that environmental investments are beyond just a technical infrastructure; they are part of a deep responsibility felt towards future generations. It was announced that renewable energy investments will continue to increase in order to make Eskişehir a more resilient, green, and sustainable city against the climate crisis.
