Partnership Between the Municipality and Fireworks Company in France Sparked Controversy

In the French city of Compiègne, the partnership between the municipality and the organization company for the traditional 'Masters de feu' (Masters of Fire) fireworks competition has become the target of harsh criticism from the local left-wing opposition. Socialist municipal council member Claire Reboisson questioned the transparency of the contract, claiming that the municipality acted not merely as a sponsor of the event but as a secret organizer. The fact that the fee collected by the municipality from the organizing company for its services balanced out the sponsorship payment made for the company was described by the opponents as a financial manipulation. This large-scale pyrotechnic show, which has been organized in the city for about ten years, is preparing to bring thousands of spectators together at the hippodrome every September. However, the cost structure and the execution method of the event have initiated a deep debate in the city's agenda.

Regarding the use of public resources, the biggest backlash stems from the contradictions the event's financial operation presents to the public. According to official figures, the municipality invoices the organization company 32,272.50 Euros in return for logistics, technical, and manpower support. However, the same company collects exactly the same amount back from the municipality in return for the municipality's logo being featured on event materials, appearing on the website, and the distributed invitations. Opposition representatives argue that this mutual invoicing process is actually done to conceal the municipality's direct and expense-free financial support to the event. The left wing argues that the city is in the position of the main organizer and that this process is far from transparent and does not align with the public interest.

Environmental and nature conservation concerns constitute another significant dimension that further fuels these financial debates. The hippodrome where the event takes place is located very close to a protected state forest and the wildlife habitats within it. Reboisson stated that the environmental impacts of organizing such a large fireworks display on the borders of the Natura 2000 area have not been sufficiently examined by independent institutions. Submitting the contract to a vote without obtaining the opinions of the Regional Environmental Authority (MRAE) and the Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning, and Housing (DREAL) on this matter was considered a serious irregularity. Opponents are demanding the process be halted, emphasizing that the destructive effects of noise and light pollution on the region's sensitive ecosystem are being ignored.

The criticisms of the opposition parties are not limited to financial and environmental issues; social justice and the municipality's priorities are also being brought to the table. The fact that the ticket prices for the event are quite high is criticized on the grounds that a large portion of the public is deprived of the opportunity to watch these shows. In the eyes of the opposition, the cost of 29 Euros just to sit on a chair and 49 Euros to sit on an armchair is shown as proof that this organization has turned into an elitist entertainment rather than a public service. The opposition argues that the budget and effort allocated to such luxury events should be directed towards much more urgent and basic social needs, such as installing blinds on the windows of nurseries. The fact that staff at childcare centers have to use blankets instead of sunshades due to the lack of awnings leads to questioning of the municipality's priorities.

Despite all these harsh criticisms, Mayor Philippe Marini took a stance in favor of approving the contract, describing the opposition's claims as subjective assessments. According to Marini, this event attracts 12,000 visitors to the city and contributes significantly to the local economy. In this session, where some members from the right wing also voted against it due to their suspicions, it was argued that the event increases the city's brand value. Additionally, allegations of a conflict of interest arose after an opposition member pointed out in the council that the daughter of a deputy mayor responsible for events works for these companies. Stating that he acted cautiously due to past legal issues, the mayor preferred to withdraw the relevant person from the voting process, and the controversial contract continued to maintain its place on the city's agenda.
