Hygiene Lapses and Mosquito Infestation Found in Hyderabad Restaurant Inspections

Food safety inspections conducted recently in Hyderabad have revealed that many food establishments in the city are severely violating hygiene standards. Inspections at the Dasara restaurant in the Nagole area revealed the presence of flies in the kitchen, slippery and damaged floors, and expired food items. During the inspection, it was found that food items were left open, exposed to dust and flies, refrigerators needed cleaning, and floors were covered with garbage.

The inspection teams added to their reports that staff did not wear mandatory protective gear such as aprons or gloves, and there were no labels or information on food items. When the establishment authorities were asked to produce the FoSTaC certificate, which denotes food safety training and certification, and water analysis certificates, no documents were provided. Due to these grave violations, it was announced that the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) issued an official notice to the establishment and initiated legal proceedings.

Within the scope of the inspections, similar issues were detected at Lucky's Kitchen and Family Restaurant located in the old Malkajgiri region, and precautions were increased. In the raid conducted at this restaurant, hygiene deficiencies such as clogged drains, open trash bins, and lack of records regarding pest control were identified. Authorities determined that a significant portion of stored food had expired or was unlabeled, emphasizing that it poses a serious risk to public health.

In a detailed inspection at Lucky's Kitchen, it was understood that legal requirements such as FoSTaC and personnel health certificates were not met. However, despite these negatives, the inspection report noted that some personnel followed personal hygiene rules, using hair nets and gloves. Additionally, it was stated that there were commendable aspects of the establishment, such as displaying the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) license in a visible place and using butter paper when packing food.

These events once again highlight the importance of continuity and rigor in food safety inspections, while raising concerns among Hyderabad residents about access to safe food. It was learned that authorized officials confirmed that sanctions would be applied to violating establishments as a result of the inspections and necessary improvements would be made. Municipal officials announced that the fight against elements threatening citizens' health would continue and that similar inspections would continue on a surprise basis.
