Historic Funeral in Iran: Millions Pour into the Streets for Khamenei

A massive funeral ceremony was held in the capital, Tehran, for Iran's late Religious Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Millions of mourners dressed in black flooded the city's streets to attend the event, which was supported as a show of strength by the Iranian theocracy. Khamenei's flag-draped coffin was displayed alongside the coffins of family members killed in an airstrike conducted during the early days of the war launched by Israel and the United States. During the ceremony, the crowd expressed their anger by chanting slogans demanding the death of United States President Donald Trump. Attendees were seen trying to touch the coffin and throw their belongings at it for blessing. During these actions, known as a traditional method of blessing in Iran, officials on ladders from fire trucks sprayed water in a mist to cool down the crowd overwhelmed by the heat. However, the massive density of people caused serious concern among officials regarding the danger of a potential stampede. Continuous announcements were made from street loudspeakers, warning the public to walk slowly, avoid pushing, and stay on the sides of the road. This procession in the streets of Tehran reached Mehrabad International Airport after a journey of approximately twelve hours. From there, according to state television, Khamenei's body was flown to the city of Qom, one of the important centers of the Shia religion, where a memorial service will be held on Tuesday.

In the later stages of the process, it became evident that the mourning period, which will end on Thursday with Khamenei's burial at the Imam Reza Shrine in the city of Mashhad, Iran—his birthplace—was highly extensive. The Iranian government organized these historic memorial events by completely halting streets, airspace, and daily life to foster a spirit of national unity and solidarity. As the funeral progressed, the tone of the mourners and the banners they carried became harsher, and calls for revenge intensified. While the crowd carried banners demanding the killing of both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, an official portrait of Trump was also displayed hanging along the ceremony route. Participants explicitly stated that they would continue on the path of their deceased leader with clenched fists and would definitely avenge this death in the near future.

This tense atmosphere is unfolding against the backdrop of ongoing war negotiations between the United States and Iran, coinciding with an extremely sensitive military period. Iran's demand to have a certain degree of control over the Strait of Hormuz, a globally critical waterway, after closing it during the war, was firmly rejected by the US. The US demands the complete reopening of the strait through negotiations, the withdrawal of Tehran's controversial nuclear program, and a permanent end to the war. However, the parties are experiencing deep disagreements on many key issues, primarily the nuclear program and the conflicts between Israel and Hezbollah. Officials state that the negotiations are expected to be back on the agenda after Khamenei's burial procedures are completed.

American federal officials are also closely monitoring these reactions displayed at Khamenei's funeral. This is because the US has been tracking Iran-originated threats for years following Trump's 2020 order to kill elite Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani. Even though the Iranian government consistently denies having a plan to assassinate Trump, it is frequently emphasized in hardline propaganda that the US president is a target. All these developments keep the Trump administration—who threatened to destroy Iranian civilization during the war—on high alert once again. The funeral of the 86-year-old Khamenei is not only a show of strength for Iran's internal dynamics but is also seen as a harbinger of a period of crisis and bargaining that could have significant consequences for Middle East and world geopolitics.
