Bear Attack in Seferihisar, İzmir: 70-Year-Old Osman Güntaş Lost His Life

In a tragic incident that occurred at night in Doğanbey Mahallesi, affiliated with the Seferihisar district of İzmir, 70-year-old Osman Güntaş was attacked by a bear while sleeping on the sofa in front of his house. Upon locals noticing the situation and notifying the authorities, gendarmerie and medical teams were dispatched to the scene; however, the elderly man was seriously injured as a result of the attack.

Osman Güntaş was provided with first aid by the medical teams who arrived at the scene and, due to his critical condition, was first taken to Seferihisar Necat Hepkon State Hospital by ambulance. Upon realizing during the initial intervention that the patient's life was still in danger, he was referred to Dokuz Eylül University Research and Application Hospital to provide better treatment opportunities.

Güntaş, who was treated intensively by doctors at Dokuz Eylül University Research and Application Hospital, could not be saved despite all medical efforts and lost his life in the hospital. The loss of life of a person attacked by a bear was met with great shock and sorrow in the region.

Following the incident, security and search operations were launched in the region. Gendarmerie teams and officials from the Department of Nature Conservation and National Parks initiated a large-scale operation to identify and capture the bear that carried out the attack. It was reported that security measures have been increased in residential areas close to the countryside to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Warnings were issued regarding the fact that such wildlife incidents can rarely be seen in areas close to residential settlements and that citizens need to be careful. Nature conservation teams stated that bears are generally living beings that do not attack humans but defend themselves when they feel threatened, and continue their work to investigate the incident in detail and take necessary precautions.
