Minister of Industry and Construction of Kazakhstan Yersayın Nagaspayev announced that in the first half of 2026, the country's metallurgical production experienced a decrease of 2.7 percent compared to the previous year. The minister stated that the main reasons for this decline were planned maintenance and repair works at the facilities and the gradually deteriorating quality of the mineral raw material base.
Despite this, thanks to the supply of raw materials needed by the enterprises, a recovery of 1.8 percent was recorded in the data as of the end of May. The delivery of raw materials containing copper, zinc, and gold from local producers was increased, and zinc concentrate shipments were restarted.
In order to overcome the negative situation in production, Kazakhstan aims to diversify its raw material imports. In this context, agreements on raw material supply were reached with Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan. One of the contracts covers the supply of approximately 30 thousand tons of zinc ore per year.
