An analysis conducted by the Thailand Department of Intellectual Property revealed a massive increase in global artificial intelligence (AI) patents. In the period from 2007 to 2026, AI patent applications grew 75.2 times, reaching 4,361 groups from 58 groups. Especially following the introduction of generative AI models like ChatGPT in 2023-2024, applications jumped by 52.3%, indicating that the technological competition is just at its beginning.

From a geographical perspective, the tech world exhibits a clear bipolar structure; the US and China hold 65.2% of global AI patents. While the US is in a leading position with a 33.5% share, patents are predominantly concentrated in giant technology companies such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and IBM. China closely follows with a 31.8% share and demonstrates its patent power through Baidu, Huawei, and various universities.

The report also recommended that Thailand seize opportunities in this field by developing AI agents (Local Agents) suited to its local language and work culture. Moreover, considering that only 15.5% of global AI patents are internationally registered, there is a significant gap for local developers. Thailand's strong legal infrastructure, such as the PDPA, and its advanced service sector provide the country with a huge advantage in RegTech and AI governance technologies.
