Kuzey Kalkınma launches $6.9 million fund for forest workers

Northern Development Initiative Trust announced that it has launched a $6.9 million grant program to support the training, recruitment, and retention of workers in the forest industry. This fund serves as a workforce support mechanism created as part of the response to customs tariffs by the Canada and British Columbia (B.C.) governments. Designed considering the economic challenges faced by workers in the forestry sector and the structural changes in the industry, the program aims to help workers acquire new skills and transition into different fields. This step will support regional economic development while also helping employers retain their talented staff. Officials emphasize that the forest industry has long been a fundamental sector for British Columbia communities and that this support is of critical importance.

Under the announced grant program, workers are planned to be supported in three main areas. The first includes reskilling workers so they can quickly transition into in-demand professions. Secondly, it aims to prevent layoffs and retain the current workforce through training programs encouraged by employers. Through this, employers will be able to redirect their employees for different opportunities and maintain their competitiveness. The third pillar of support will allow small businesses and contractors serving forest workers to diversify into local infrastructure projects. Thus, businesses negatively affected by the sector's contraction will be encouraged to create new revenue sources.

The financial details of the program also offer a highly attractive and comprehensive structure for employers. Accordingly, a maximum grant support of $1 million can be provided for each applying employer. This support covers 85 percent of the combined wages and training expenses of eligible personnel during the training period. However, the amount of this support provided per personnel cannot exceed $50 thousand. This arrangement aims to create a level playing field for both small businesses and large organizations to train their employees. Thanks to this financial support, companies will have the opportunity to preserve and improve their workforce during periods of economic uncertainty.

The scope of institutions and organizations that can apply for the grant program has also been kept quite broad. Indigenous and First Nations organizations operating in the forestry sector, public and private companies of all sizes, and non-profit organizations aiming to create employment in the sector can apply. In addition, businesses in other natural resource sectors that currently hire or train workers displaced from the forestry sector can also be included in this program. This inclusive approach has the potential to accelerate cross-sector workforce integration. Officials state that these broad eligibility criteria ensure that the segments most affected by the economic transformation are not left behind.

Ben Campbell, CEO of Northern Development Initiative Trust, drew attention to the historical importance of the forest industry for British Columbia in his evaluation of the matter. Stating that behind every transformation in the economy there are real people who directly feel the impact of this change, Campbell said his organization is proud to support the federal and provincial governments. He emphasized that the program will help not only workers adapt to change but also employers retain their qualified personnel. It was announced that applications will start being accepted online on 14 Temmuz. The relevant application guide and forms have been made accessible through Northern Development's official website.
