19-Year-Old Driver Arrested After Fleeing the Scene of Crashing into Police in Limasol

In an incident that occurred in the Limasol city of South Cyprus, a 19-year-old driver was taken into custody after fleeing a police checkpoint and causing a police officer to sustain minor injuries. The Limasol Traffic Accidents Investigation Branch (TAE) is continuing its investigation into the incident that took place on 9 July and resulted in a police officer being injured. On the date the incident occurred, the driver of a double-cabin (pick-up) vehicle without license plates was signaled to stop. Failing to comply with the police's stop warning, the driver began to speed excessively and flee dangerously, violating numerous traffic rules in the process. During the escape, the suspect ran a red light, endangering both their own life and the lives of citizens in the vicinity.

The situation became even more tense when the fleeing driver was forced to stop their vehicle at a certain point in Limasol. The driver put their vehicle in reverse in an attempt to prevent the pursuing police motorcycle from hitting them from behind or to ward off the police. During this reckless and dangerous maneuver, the driver crashed into the police motorcycle, causing the police officer at the scene to sustain minor injuries. Following this violent act, the injured police officer resorted to his service weapon in order to gain control of the situation and stop the vehicle. The police fired a total of three warning shots towards the tires of the fleeing vehicle, but the suspect vehicle completely vanished from the scene and managed to lose its trail.

Following this shocking incident, the police officer who sustained minor injuries was dispatched to Limasol State Hospital by emergency medical teams. After receiving initial treatment and undergoing the necessary medical checks at the hospital, it was reported that the police officer's health condition is good and he is not in a life-threatening condition. Upon the police officer's discharge from the hospital on the same day, a judicial investigation was launched into the incident, and an extensive effort was initiated to identify the fugitive driver. Law enforcement examined security cameras in the area and obtained statements from citizens who witnessed the incident. Ultimately, thanks to the evidence gathered and the clues evaluated, a definitive witness statement was obtained indicating that the person who committed the act was a 19-year-old youth.

Following the critical evidence obtained within the scope of the investigation, an official arrest warrant was issued by the court for the capture of the 19-year-old suspect. Police teams did not let the suspect out of their sight and located him near his residence in Limasol at around 23.15 last night. The teams noticed that the double-cabin vehicle, determined to have been used by the young suspect in the incident, was parked in front of his house. Seeing the police, the 19-year-old suspect realized the situation and attempted to flee once again. However, the law enforcement officers who intervened rapidly successfully prevented the youth's escape attempt, and taking him into custody in accordance with the court order issued against him, handed him over to the police forces.

The detained youth was taken to the Limasol TAE (Traffic Accidents Investigation Branch) buildings to be interrogated, and official procedures were initiated there. Following the taking of the suspect's statement, it was announced by the police that he was charged with multiple offenses. These charges include; reckless and dangerous driving, failure to comply with the stop warning of a uniformed police officer, attempted intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm, and various traffic violations. Additionally, the double-cabin vehicle used in the incident was towed to the police station to be confiscated as critical evidence for the continuation of the police investigation and judicial processes. The Limasol TAE is resolutely continuing its comprehensive investigations to elucidate all dimensions of the incident.
