Lyra McKee's sister: Our hearts are broken but we continue our struggle in our sister's name

Lyra McKee's academic and author sister Nichola Corner published a blog post on the seventh anniversary of her sister's killing in the Creggan district of Londonderry in 2019. In an emotional and striking blog post, Corner detailed the ups and downs of hope and disappointment her family has experienced over the last seven years. McKee lost her life due to fire opened by the New IRA while covering violence events in Northern Ireland on April 18, 2019, and the incident caused wide repercussions across the world.

Corner started her writing by stating that they do not attempt to compare the tragedy their family experienced with anything, but that no one should endure such an ordeal, and also addressed the difficulties in the search for justice. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) had announced in 2023 that an indictment was filed against a suspect in connection with the murder on the charge of murder as 'the person who pulled the trigger'. However, delays in the court process and legal procedures caused the family's pain to be refreshed and amounted to a form of torture.

The related trial was dropped last year because the police failed to convey 'significant evidence' to the prosecutor within the responsibility period as part of the investigation. Corner, directing harsh criticism to the incompetence of the relevant authorities and their efforts going to waste, expressed that they were disappointed because the efforts for justice were obstructed by the system. Not allowing the suspect to be tried at this stage was a hard blow to accept for the McKee family.

However, it was reported that the authorities have not completely abandoned the investigation against the suspect they view as the perpetrator of the incident, and work continues to revive the file. The PSNI announced to the public that the investigation into the 'murder' and 'possession of explosive material' charges against the suspect in question is still open and new evidence is being collected. This situation shows that even if small, there is still a hope for justice in the grieving process for the family.

Finally, in her post remembering her sister Lyra McKee, Corner made a call for more attention to be paid to the voices of those working with devotion for the establishment of peace for the whole world. She emphasized that as a family their hearts are broken, but they have not lost their will to live and struggle to keep McKee's name and legacy alive. Corner added to her words that they will not stop until Northern Ireland becomes the place of Lyra's dreams where everyone can express themselves freely and journalists can work safely.
