Intense traffic restrictions starting today in Madrid for Pride Week celebrations

The Spanish capital Madrid is entering the most intense period of this year's Pride Week (Orgullo) events and implementing a comprehensive mobility plan across the city to ensure security and manage crowds. Madrid Municipality announced that traffic will be restricted or completely closed on the city's main arteries, especially due to the major march and concerts taking place on Saturday. Citizens are strongly advised to use public transportation such as metro, commuter trains, and buses instead of private vehicles, with measures remaining effective throughout the weekend. These precautions were taken both to ensure the events proceed smoothly and to minimize potential security risks.

One of the first and important areas where traffic restrictions will intensify will be the Chueca neighborhood, considered the heart of the events. Here, on Saturday between 17:30 and 03:30 past midnight, many streets such as Pelayo, Gravina, Augusto Figueroa, San Marcos, Reina, Clavel, Infantas, Barquillo, and Colmenares will be closed to traffic. Closures on certain sections of these roads will cover the area between Hortaleza, Barquillo, Alcalá, Gran Vía, and San Marcos streets. Additionally, on Sunday evening, restrictions will be re-applied starting at 18:00 on some streets and avenues in the same district until the final events conclude, and the closure of the city center to traffic will continue.

Paseo del Prado, Cibeles Square, Recoletos Street, and Colón Square, which are located on the main route of the Pride March (Manifestación Estatal) in Madrid and are among the city's iconic points, stand out as the areas that will be affected by the strictest closures due to the event. Although the march is planned to start at 19:00, roads along the route will begin to be closed to traffic gradually starting at 16:00 as part of security and organization preparations. Authorities warned that these closures could continue until Sunday morning depending on participant density and that traffic flow may be obstructed on Paseo del Prado for part of the weekend.

Extra traffic regulations will also be implemented within the scope of security measures in the Colón region at the northern foot of the march and around Méndez Álvaro and Carlos V Square (Glorieta de Carlos V) in the south where preparations are made. Madrid Municipality strongly recommends preferring Metro, Cercanías, and EMT buses due to the risk of getting stuck in long traffic for those trying to enter the city center by vehicle. It was stated that public transport services will be increased to meet the rising passenger demand within the scope of the Madrid 2026 Pride Week (MADO 2026) organization, and some metro stations may be temporarily closed or bus routes may be changed depending on security needs.
