July Raise for Millions of Retirees Confirmed: 17.75% Increase to Base Pensions

Along with the latest data announced by the Turkey Statistical Institute, the inflation raise rate to be received in July by millions of SSK and Bağ-Kur retirees has been finalized. According to the June inflation data, consumer prices showed an increase of 0.99 percent on a monthly basis. Annual inflation reached 32.11 percent during this period, revealing that the trend in economic indicators continues. The total inflation realized in the first six-month period of the year has been calculated as 17.75 percent. This six-month cumulative rate directly determines the base raise rate to be applied to the pensions of retirees. Thus, an increase equal to the six-month inflation difference is envisioned for the pensions of retirees.

With the reflection of the said 17.75 percent increase on retirement pensions, indicative calculations have also become clear. For example, a base pension currently at 10 thousand lira will increase to 11 thousand 775 lira in the new period. Similarly, the pension of a retiree with a base pension of 15 thousand lira will increase to 17 thousand 662 lira. When a base pension of 20 thousand lira is taken as a basis, the new pension amount is envisioned to be 23 thousand 550 lira. Pensions at the level of 25 thousand lira will also reach 29 thousand 437 lira with this inflation raise made. However, the net amounts deposited into the retirees' accounts may vary depending on the person's SGK status, base pension, and the amount of additional payments they receive.

On the other hand, the issue of the lowest retirement pension, which is one of the most critical issues for retirees, has not been fully resolved yet. According to current legislation, the base amount of the lowest retirement pension does not automatically increase with the announced inflation rates. There is an obligation to make a new legal regulation in order to increase the lower limit pension so that citizens with low base pensions do not suffer. For this reason, the situation of low-income retirees is currently in great uncertainty, and a step is expected to be taken regarding the issue. Millions of people hope that the government and relevant ministries will take an action so that the pension they will receive in the upcoming period does not fall below the minimum wage level.

In this context, the eyes and ears of millions of retirees are currently on the Turkey Grand National Assembly and the announcements to be made by the government. If a bill to be brought to the parliamentary agenda regarding the issue is accepted, a significant improvement can be made in the lowest retirement pension. If the authorities prepare a positive regulation on the issue, the grievance of low-income retirees will be eliminated, and the pensions they will receive will also be increased. However, if no additional regulation is made, citizens receiving base pensions will only be able to benefit from the raise rate applied to their own base pensions. In this case, the risk of economic difficulties continuing for the lowest-income retirees, who struggle to maintain their purchasing power against inflation, will come to the agenda.

The clarification of inflation data is a major step taken so that millions of households can make budget plans. The regular and automatic increase of 17.75 percent made to base pensions will directly affect a portion of retirees within the current system. However, considering inflationary pressures and increases in the cost of living, whether this rate will be sufficient is frequently debated by citizens. Possible additional regulations that may come out of the parliament in the coming days are of great importance in terms of social state policies and retiree welfare in Turkey.
